HDV with FCP question
Posted by Dave Colonna on October 9, 2005 at 9:45 pmHey guys, i feel i dont express the fact that you guys rock. Everytime i got a question you guys are usually right there. its better than tech support.
Anyway, I just installed fcp 4.5 HD and i got footage for an hd music video that wont play on my computer. I am also using quicktime 7.
my question is, how do i get these quicktime clips to import into my fcp? apparantly the files are hdv 1080i50. I googled it and it seems that i need fcp 5 to run these clips? is this true?
Another question would be what quicktime program would i need to run these clips? I get the audio, but no video.
any insight would be fantastic.
thanks

October 9, 2005 at 10:37 pmWhat codec is it exactly? If it’s the AIC, I think that codec might come with iMovie HD. You can also spend the money and upgrade to FCP5 and you’ll be good to go. 1080i50 is a PAL standard. I don’t know where you live, but be prepared to edit on a pal timeline with pal monitors.

October 9, 2005 at 10:39 pmDave- FCPHD5 does HDV native. FCP4.5 doesn’t do HDV. I just ran an HDV movie with my QT 7.0.2 and it played fine. I guess QT could be using a codec from FCP. I know iMovieHD plays HDV. At least you may be able to watch it there.
Hope this helps.

October 9, 2005 at 10:43 pmFCP 4.5 and QT 7 aren’t reliable together. You need to either upgrade to FCP 5 or go to the Apple site and download the installer to revert to QT 6.5.2.

Depending on which version of QT 7 you have.
Also, you are correct. You can’t directly see HDV files in FCP HD (4.5). The “HD” in FCP HD refers to DVCPro HD. You’d need Lumiere HD to ingest the HDV material to use in conjunction with FCP 4.5.
Best solution is to upgrade to FCP 5.
You’re not planning on using FireWire drives, are you?

October 10, 2005 at 4:18 pmFireWire drives aren’t recommended for use by Apple.
Many use them and “get away” with it. Many come here looking for solutions when it starts going wonky on them.
I’ve even used them for super-short, uncomplicated projects when I’ve had to travel.
However, they’re just not recommended.

October 11, 2005 at 6:07 pmWell just a note, I have edited several full lenght documentaries with lots of keying and layering of the last couple of years without any drive related problems. Perhaps the issues arise when people mix the chip sets in there drive enclosures. My earlier experience with audio post production offer the advise to always use Oxford 911 chipset enclosures for my drive and I have never mixed them with any others.
I have never tried this with a G5 though and I’m sure I have heard several stories about problems with the firewire chips on some models.
I have purshased a new JVC GY-HD100U camera and in the specs for data throughput it states that DV is 25bps and JVC’s HDV is around 17bps…
I found that interesting.Daniel R. Shattuck

October 18, 2005 at 8:19 pmHello all
I have been reading and following all the threads related to HDV worflow. I am in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I am working on an hour long documentray shot completely on HDV using the Sony camera. I have about 22 hours of footage, which I will be looking at tomorrow.
I wanted some suggestions on my workflow. I am working with FCP 5, a G5 dual processor, 2GB, no capture card, but can get one if needed.
I have been deciding to edit native HDV, capture all the footage via firewire onto 500GB FW800 drives. But it seems like almost everyone prefers converting the HDV footage to an i-frame format. but what’s the point of having the native codec, if you are going to convert everything.
Secondly, considering the amount of footage I have, i can’t convert it to a 10-bit uncompressed format. It would take way too much time.
My next option is to downconvert my HDV footage during capture to DV-PAL. Am I going to lose a lot of picture quality? What are the cons if I stay native?
My master has to be a digibeta PAL.
Please advise me on my workflow. I don’t have a capture card, but I can get one if it is essential to my edit and the final output.
Thank You.
