Dude, pay the $300 bucks for a Horita BSG-50. Set it up and forget about it. You could try looping the composite of the aja io out to the ref in of the deck and vice- versa, but the black burst will be the proper way to do it.

My powerbook is four years old and in desperate need of an overhaul.

The reason why I told Jamie to wait is valid though. No native FW800, but there’s the expresscard/34 slot that will be nice. We can start attaching our laptops to small SATA RAIDS, who needs FW800 then? Everyone’s making a big stink about no native FW800, but if you were really truly editing on a powerbook, you needed a some sort of cardbus to separate your dv camera/deck from your fw800 drive anyway. If you go with the faster processor and the 1 GB of RAM, the 1 GB is one stick (not two) so you won’t have to throw it out and get a new one. I got this info off of the apple website, who knows what’ll happen when they start to ship.

I’m sure running apps in Rosetta will be slower, but I don’t need microsoft word to be blazing fast anyway. As long as FCP works native I’m good. I think, though, I might be even more patient and wait for a 17″ model.

I was told a rule long ago that buy the best, fastest, most loaded computer you can afford today so you can hold on to it longer and get more use out of it in the future and it has really held true for me. If you are in the market for a laptop, today, why would you even consider a G4 Powerbook knowing what will be here right around the corner. Jamie, save your money and wait til February, unless you have a job in January.

Apple has a 2Gbit Fibre and ATTO has the 42ES and the 44ES a two channel and four channel PCIe 4 Gb fibre channel card.

When you say you are using SATA drive, is that an external RAID, or simply an internal SATA?

10 bit uncompressed requires some bandwidth and at least two drives striped together are recommended, and more than two drives for total assurance.

What are you monitoring your 10 bit with if you aren’t using the io?

Please give more specific info about your drive set up as my instincts are telling me this is where your problem is stemming from.

Did you do a full erase and install or just an upgrade of the OS? A full erase and install is the most trouble free way to do it.

If I were you, I’d wait a few more days until the announcements from MacWorld come in. There’s rumors and speculation about dual core laptops (I’m not trying to start or proliferate any more rumors here), but if the rumors turn out to be true, a dual core laptop would be pretty sweet for FCP.

Also, I’m sure there’ll be plenty more B stock/refurbished items coming up for sale as people will try to liquidate their current stock to make room for the newer technology.

EIther an erase and install OR (perhaps more preferably) install Tiger on a completely separate drive in your G5. This way, you will keep a known, solid and stable system until you get everything installed correctly and tested with Tiger. Panther will still be solid and stable on drive A, and tiger will be on drive B. this way all you have to do is choose your start up disk in the sys preferences when you quickly need to do an edit, update a project, or whatever.

Install the OS then run all the software updates. Install FCP, open it once, quit and run all the software updates. Install the latest drivers/firmware from your capture hardware. Open FCP and begin testing.

If you decide to update an old project, make sure you duplicate it first to keep a version in 4.5, and then open the duplicated copy in FCP5. All of this is anal and perhaps a little overkill, but I have followed these practices and the upgrade has been really really smooth for me. Some of my buddies did a simple OS upgrade and they have had problems, not only with FCP, but with weird idiosyncrasies in After Effects and the like. Those problems went away when they finally bit the bullet and started with a brand new erase and install.

Also, by running this dual drive system, you can drag over any plug ins/appps/or data from your Panther drive to your Tiger drive. Once you are assured that Tiger is up and running for you, you can then erase the Panther drive and keep it for extra storage.
