To at least TRY an “external sync” to see if it makes a difference, just turn on any camcorder (you can leave the lens cap on) and feed its composite video output to the sync input.
If you find that you NEED this, a Horita generator will work fine.

Dude, pay the $300 bucks for a Horita BSG-50. Set it up and forget about it. You could try looping the composite of the aja io out to the ref in of the deck and vice- versa, but the black burst will be the proper way to do it.
