I know it seems counter intuitive but trim up on the input channels and get yourself some more level using the mixer. I ignore the -20 db thing. Have you ever tried to make a dvd at those levels? It’s almost inaudible. When mastering out to digital tape (whatever format) I usually set my tone to -12.

I’m sure my method is probably “wrong” but people should be able to hear the expensive video they paid for, no? That’s how I feel about it anyway, your mileage may vary.

Are you using an easy setup? A custom setup? if so go into the audio/video settings and change it. Also, if 12 channels are ghosted in FCP 5 clip settings, then mute all the channels except the first two.

Sure, a few. Of course if you change the AE preferences, it’s going to dynamically change the Kona output, it’s what you are telling the Kona to do. If you have an HD comp and want to view it in SD then you should leave it in an HD comp, and use the kona control panel to downconvert your HD signal. Select your secondary output to be whatever flavor of SD you want (525, 625, whatever frame standard your HD material is based on) and then select whichever output you are using to monitor (SDI 1,2 or analog component). Now, switch the output of that pipe from primary to secondary. There’s also color space conversion in the K2 control panel from 709 (hd) to 601 (sd), automatic and other choices. You can choose what you want. Also, don’t forget (if you’re working in US NTSC) about analog setup levels. That might account for the ‘gamma’ shift you seem to be experiencing.

This doesn’t seem right. Are you using the analog inputs of the Kona? Try turning the input from +24 to +18. If you do crank the mixer, is the signal clipping through the mixer? how low or high are the audio signals coming off of the tape?

Are you trying to downconvert your HD footage to preview the SD image? If so you should use the Kona 2 to downconvert the signal and not change AE preferences.

The BSG-50, that’s right the BSG-50.

If you calculate the frame offset, it should be accurate everytime. What you need to do is match your timeline timecode to the tape timecode. For instance, Stripe a Beta from 59:40:00 to over one hour. Create a sequence in FCP (could be anything, a matte color, text, whatever). Do an edit to tape assemble edit telling FCP to start at 1:00:00:00. Lay off ten seconds of media. Look at the footage frame by frame on the tape. If the media started at 01:00:00:04, then you have a 4 frame offset (a value of -4 should be entered in the tc offset to start fcp sending video 4 frames early, thus overcoming the offset/delay).

Then repeat the process and you’ll see that FCP should now be in sync with your deck.

You can calculate the incoming frame offset by digitizing the “super” in of your beta deck and compare it to the tc in FCP.

This is great use for an analog mixer. If you have one, use it. Zero out the tone from your beta tapes to -12 in FCP.

You shouldn’t have to mess with the gain inside osx/fcp.
