  • 4×3 into anamorphic sequence – something change?

Posted by David Robinson on January 28, 2006 at 6:50 pm

I know this topic has been covered plenty here, but I’m trying to make sure I’m doing this right. I’m nesting a 4×3 sequence into an anamorphic sequence. FCP stretches the 4×3 sequence to fit the anamorphic. Do I need to change the aspect ratio under distort so it is not stretched and if so, to what value? I thought in the past FCP just placed it center with no stretch. Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Are you trying to letterbox your 4×3 footage?

Use the widescreen filter and choose the aspect ratio you desire (1.78:1 for 16:9).

The technique I think you are trying to do is take anamorphic footage and nest it in a 4×3 sequence to give you the letterbox. I don’t think it works the other way around.

Yes, I’m trying to go from 4×3 to anamorphic with a pillarbox on the left and right of the 4×3 footage in the anamorphic sequence. FCP stretches the 4×3 when I drop it into the anamorphic sequence. I want black on each side of the 4×3 (actually I’m going to drop a graphic behind it) and I want to know exactly how much I have to change aspect ration in distort. 33 looks right but I’m not sure. I thought when I did this before, FCP didn’t stretch the footage.

Okay, i got ya. I didn’t konw you were going for a pillar box look. 33.33 is the ratio.
