Thanks Andrea. That tutorial isn’t really what I’m looking for, since it only uses Drizzle for the ripples, but doesn’t simulate the splash of water on the ground. I actually figured it out to a certain extent using Particular with Bounce and Aux System to simulate these collisions of the drops with the terrain. I’m still having a hard time with two problems, though:
1) To define to floor layer in the Bounce feature, I created a layer with a grid and tried to align it with the ground, but am still having a very hard time manipulating the coordinates so that they fit. Does anyone have any tips for doing this? Seems like a common practice…
2) There are actually several surfaces that are hit by the rain – the ground, a car windshield, etc. Is there maybe a way to configure more than one floor layer in the Bounce feature?
Thanks for any help!

Thanks, Dave! I just looked at some tutorials on this, and you’re right, that’s what I was going for.
My first impression is that I should be trying to create a donut-shaped displacement map that expands from the center of the mouth outwards. It should then vanish from the composition once it reaches the edge of the mouth, and an identical displacement map appears immediately thereafter (and so forth, in order to create consecutive trembles of these strips). Does that sound right? Or should the transition from one displacement map to the next be somehow more smooth? Thanks,

Thanks so much for your responses!

OK, I’ve imported it into Sony Vegas and it looks fine there, so I’ll render it again there to make it playable on both the computer and TV, like the original file. Still seems weird that this isn’t possible with the files rendered by After Effects…

Sorry, I don’t quite understand. The original video being fed into After Effects is also in PAL Widescreen format, and it plays fine on Windows Media Player. Should I burn it on DVD and see how it plays out on TV? I want the file to be playable on both (computer and TV)…
I’m pretty sure the problem is in AE, seeing as it generates the same frame size whether I choose widescreen or normal as the preset… Or do I have it wrong? -
When I play the rendered video in Windows Media Player, I get the distorted picture, like in the viewer panel in the photo in the original message.
The render settings are in the photo attached here: https://images.creativecow.net/249412/rendersettings.jpg
This is the template for PAL DV Widescreen, with only the “Video Format” changed to “Uncompressed”. I checked many times to make sure that this change does not affect any of the other settings (Pixel Aspect Ratio, Frame Size, etc.)

Hey Todd,
Thanks, but this fixes it just for the viewer panel. The rendered video is still distorted… Do you maybe know why this is? -
Hi Frank,
I want to use uncompressed AVI, to prevent the footage from being damaged by multiple compessions.
The only thing I’m changing in the template is the video codec, everything else stays the same (including the aspect ratio), but somehow this doesn’t solve the problem… Any ideas? Thanks!

OK, it was in the effects on the preview window – thanks a lot! I’ll look out for that one…
