Will,
Are your pixels square? If they are you are going to give up nearly 60% of your height. You will set a project size of 1440 x 600. Then you must ‘match aspect ratio’ on all your video events. If your footage is anamorphic and was recorded at 1440 but meant to be viewed at 1920 then your going to loose less of your height you will set the project dimensions at 1920 x 800 and pixels at 1.333.
You must find an output format that will support this frame size, which is not too hard, just try making your own preset in Sony AVC.

The temp file is the final output, when it is done it is renamed to [whatever].mov

I don’t know, but when you’re working with such big files you need lots of contiguous space. Have you looked in the Windows Event Log for application error messages?
(Start menu | right-click on My Computer | Manage | Event Viewer)I hope things are getting better for you.

Plenty of hd space? What about your temp files from the project properties? These are usually on the C drive and mine is very small.
If you make a 5 second time line selection, does it render good?

What are your render troubles? I’ve been using Vegas since ver. 6 and with the exception of some Windows (OS) issues early in Ver. 9, I have not had any problems with Vegas up through 10c.
I’m also a Windows sys admin, so maybe I can help you get to the bottom of this.

I have done this for smaller work without trouble. If you are rendering large projects, (I’ll let you define “large”), you might want to stack them with a script so they render one after the other.

No need for more templates, you should try the match media button on the new project dialog.
And check your preview quality on the video preview box.
