  • Don,

Thanks for your quick response…I think I’ll probably try it your way also since Im on such a time crunch. Jeff.

  • Does it have something to do with not allowing the log and capture to run all the way until the end of the take. It seems it I allow the capture process to go into the ‘blue’ per say that is when it happens but if I hit Esc right before it captures the audio all the way.

    Does that make sense?

    Larry,

Again, thanks for seeing me through this man…I trashed my preferences and reset everything and so far it looks as if it’s syncing up again. I tried old and new clips and everything so far has gone A OKAY.

    Thanks again, Jeff.

    Larry,

Thank you very much for the time you spent in your respnse. That is why I love and respect this site. Pro’s helping others…I dig it.

A few things though: On my G5 I have two internal hard drives. The first drive is the 250gb drive that came installed. This drive is where I install all my programs and documents. all that jazz…When I purchased the tower I had a second drive installed just for storage and that drive is a 400gb ‘storage’ drive. This drive is where all my scratch video and audio files are placed. I am capturing my footage on with a firewire 800 cord directly from my XL2 to my tower.

I will definitely check on what settings I am capturing my audio. I am almost positive that I am capturing it at the correct settings…but I could be wrong.

The strange thing is that a little bit after I posted my comment I went back and the footage was syncing again. Even the footage from day one. I started uploading more footage and then watched it again…everything was cool but as I watched more footage it seemed to slowly get off track again.

Could this have something to do with the amount of RAM that I have…I have 2.5gb. My storage drive has about 275 to 300gb’s available so I dont think it’s that I have too much info on there.

I once heard that it is better to capture with a firewire 400 cable than a 800 cable…is that correct?

Thanks again, if nothing changes after tonight I am probably going to have to trash and reset my preferences…AHHH. I’ll admit Im a little worried about that.

    Jeff.

Am I correct in think that we should be playing on set playback at 200% or should it be at some other ratio?

Also, what is the best way in FCP to slow down the footage. The standard way or is there a smoother way. I am just worried about image quality.

    Thanks, Jeff.

    Walter,

Your the coolest cat in town…thank you very much.

One question though…I just lost my sound. I can see that with the audio levels it is playing and I can even hear it thru my XL2 but not directly from the timeline…in the audio playback it is selected at audio follows video. That is actually the only one that is highlighted, it is not allowing any further options.

Thanks for any further input. Jeff.

  • So…check this out…I don’t know if I am doing it right or not but here is what I came up with and it seems to work…for right now…I say that because who know’s tomorrow.

So, in my audio/video settings my sequence preset is set to: DV NTSC 48 KHz – 23.98 and my capture preset is set to: dv advanced (2:3:3:2) pulldown removal.

My log and capture: ‘capture settings’ are set to:
    Device Control: DV NTSC
Capture/Input: DV NTSC 48 KHz advanced (2:3:3:2) pulldown removal.

Before I go and import this I create a new timeline that is has the 16:9 setting checked…then I go and import my clips and store then in my bin. I DO NOT place them in the timeline yet I just import them all as I need them. Once I am done importing them I check that they imported as 16:9 by double clicking them in the bin to open them in the viewer…not the canvas/timeline. Once I know that they imported correctly I select the timeline and go to the sequence tab and select settings and remove the check in the 16:9 anamorphic to make the timeline a 4:3 timeline.

Then I can start moving the clips to the timeline without them being stretched and they fall perfectly in line with a widescreen format within the 4:3 ratio. I was even able to view it on my external video monitor and in my eyepiece on the xl2 to make sure that it was regristering as a 16:9 image on the tv screen.

So…that being said…I have no freakin’ idea if this is the correct way…especially since it is not the way everyone else is doing this and it is not the way that I have to do it on my laptop…so who knows.

Don…does this way sound absurd??? And one more question. Where is this:

” And make sure you’ve clicked the Anamorphic check box. In FCP 4.5 it’s in the first tab.”

I went to my laptop to check and see if that was checked and I just didn’t realize it but I am not sure which one you are talking about. On 5.0 on my G5 I dont even have an anamorphic box checked right now and I am being able to do what I just explained.

It’s all a bit crazier than I would have expected for FCP.

Well, Im off to bed. I have to be up around 4am to head out to shoot more. I’ll be checking this post as soon as I return.

    Thanks again, Jeff.
