  • Slow Motion affect in Music Video with FCP 5 and XL2

hello, I am going to be shooting a music video in a few weeks with the XL2 that will be edited in Final Cut Pro 5.0. We are trying to achieve the look of everything moving in a little slower timeframe yet the singers lips still synch with the song in post.

How I will be shooting this video:
    16:9
    2:3:3:2
    24p

Here is what I am trying to figure out.

    1. Should I shoot in 1/48 at 24p with the music on set playing at 200% then in post slowing it down. ?

    2. Should I shoot at 24p with a faster shutter speed to match the on set playback.

    3. What is the best way to alter the timeline in FCP. I dont want it to look jumpy or smeared when it is slowed down.

    4. Should the on set music be playing at at 200% so that when we input the footage I would slow it down to 50% to match?

Sorry for the crazy questions…the record label really wants this look and it is something I have never done before.

Thank you for any help. Jeff.

[Jeff Newton] “4. Should the on set music be playing at at 200% so that when we input the footage I would slow it down to 50% to match?”

Absolutely. The only way you’ll be able to match the slowed down lips to the normal speed music is to have them lip-synch to an over cranked music track.

Am I correct in think that we should be playing on set playback at 200% or should it be at some other ratio?

Also, what is the best way in FCP to slow down the footage. The standard way or is there a smoother way. I am just worried about image quality.

    Thanks, Jeff.
