  • Not seeing footage on external video monitor???

Posted by Jeff Newton on June 28, 2005 at 12:28 am

Hello, I am using FCP 5.0 and I am editing a piece that I shot in 24p at 2:3:3:2. I am trying to view the footage as I am editing it on my external sony tv monitor hooked up thru my xl2 video input to my firewire cable to my G5. I was able to do this earlier on with another project and it is working when I am loging and capturing but right after that it doesn’t show anything…the other day I could see the footage showing thru the XL2 viewpiece and the TV..now..nothing.

Right now the screen is just blue. The XL2 viewfinder says ‘dv in’.

Can someone let me know what I am doing wrong?

    Thanks, Jeff.

Refresh your A/V Devices, ensure that your External Video is set to All Frames and double check your Audio / Video Settings to DV Out.

    Walter,

Your the coolest cat in town…thank you very much.

One question though…I just lost my sound. I can see that with the audio levels it is playing and I can even hear it thru my XL2 but not directly from the timeline…in the audio playback it is selected at audio follows video. That is actually the only one that is highlighted, it is not allowing any further options.

Thanks for any further input. Jeff.

[Jeff Newton] “One question though…I just lost my sound. I can see that with the audio levels it is playing and I can even hear it thru my XL2 but not directly from the timeline..”

That’s correct. I’m assuming you’re sending the video out via Firewire to your camera so the audio is also going out to your camera. So you need to connect your audio outs from the camera to a sound device.

[walter biscardi] “So you need to connect your audio outs from the camera to a sound device. “

I like to connect the audio outs of the cam or deck to a mixer. I also connect my mac audio out to my mixer. I connect the speakers to the mixer’s audio out.

This way, I can monitor audio at all times coming from FCP. Soundtrack and iTunes. A simple Y-Split adapter cable from Radio Shack will also do the trick.
