BTW, you would do well to add your new system to your Qmaster cluster for FCSvr. In fact, I would add all of your systems to the cluster – donating at least one or two cores each. Cluster processing is crazy fast and the newer your machines are, the faster it processes.

I would put preference to faster processor initially. RAM prices fluctuate, but come down in the long run. Plus, I would actually go with either 6 or 12 GB as the channels are optimized for three banks per. If you go with 6, get three 2GB DIMMs. Then when you upgrade, all you’ll need is three more 2GB sticks for 12GB, or you could get another 12 with three 4GB sticks.

I see in the new ProRes line, there is an option to use 10-bit color sampling. Anyone know if the 7D is acquiring 10-bit to make that worth while?

Not everyone uses or even owns Premiere. Final Cut and AE is a pretty popular combo. If I need a quick key, I might use Boris in FCP since the clip is in my sequence. But then if the client wants more than a simple composite with that keyed footage, the ability to export the timeline with the plug-in parameters which would then translate into AE seems pretty liberating to me. It’s all about flexibility across toolsets. If you are happy within the bounds of your one integrated toolset suite, stick with that. If Adobe had a Final Cut Server competitor, I might be compelled to make that jump myself.

You can use it to transcode to a progressive format. However, if you’re going back to tape, why are you deinterlacing? What is your tape format?

You could always try it. I have gotten good results myself. Use the preview feature in Compressor to test your black restore tweaks. Using preview will save you a lot of time with trial and error.

Might have a corrupt preference file. This may do the trick.

You will probably need a BB generator to get sync. I would refer to the Decklink documentation prior to doing this since in many cases the internal sync should work.

I always de-interlace using Compressor and it works great for me. Export reference QT and import into Compressor, pick a preset, tweak as needed and submit.

Not only is it cheaper, it actually seems to do more translation – including third-party plug-in info. That’s the promise, anyway. I’ll be curious to know the reality.
