No idea, since I’ve never used virtualdub. But I will say you can encode a dvd to ‘force’ the subtitle streams to be visible.

Jane, I agree with Bill (about embedding it into the DVD). The DVD spec permits subtitles very easily.

If you’re going through the keying route, two thoughts.

    1) You’ll have a long import, unless you’ve directly rendered into one of the avid codecs or a camera codec (like DV25)

    2) The spectramatte keyer will allow you to ‘knock out’ the green.

Humor me on this- try firing up compressor with NO NETWORK attached. My hunch is that there’s something wrong with your Qmaster.

You might want to consider a better keyer than the built in one. Try DVMatte from DV Garage.

    Try trashing the compressor plist.

    In your user folder:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.compressor.plist

Many USB ‘fob’s on the market are cross platform compatible (and way cheaper than an airport card.) Just stop by your local computer store and make sure it’s cross platform.

I’d take a look at the noise industry plugins (and see if they could write something for you.) Rather than XML, it’s able to pull stuff off the web (via RSS feeds.)

You’re going to either have to get to an OS9 machine (to be able to use the avid codecs, or if you can get to a current avid (I think you have to have an adrenaline to read ABVB material.)
