QuickTime is just an architecture – you’re right that you ought to use ProRes. The question will be, which ProRes is best is about two things:
The speed of your drives/system and the quality of your source footage.The ‘cleanest’ ProRes is 4444 – but it requires pretty fast drives- it’s about 330mb/s
If you use ProRes HQ, it’s about 220 (full uncompressed HD is about 880) – and it’s a decent trade off between quality and playability. You won’t be able to see the compression here.If I was working feature length, I’d capture at ProRes Proxy (35mbs), edit and then do an online at ProRes 4444.
TL;DR – Probably ProRes HQ is good enough without stressing your system.

I’m not a fan of the ‘automatic’ anything on a codec. See what the data rate is…
Then run it through with the Youtube preset – you’ll get a file that absolutely should play back, look good, etc.

That’s normal. You know the bright green bar in the timeline – that’s real time Preview, it’s not the full quality. FCP is doing ‘magic’ to play back the still. When you export, it’ll be the quality of when you’re paused.

The only thing to add here is this: mpegstreamclip is the (cross platform, open source) method of getting material off a DVD

I don’t know what’s causing it…
It looks like it’s displaying both fields. Could you step through and see if it has the same sort of look on field 2? (Open the effect palette, move, step forward 1 field.)

You can’t playback a Data DVD on a PS3 – you need to make a bluray DVD (or a blu ray structure on a DVD5 or 9)

Everything in Motion is uncompressed. All those settings? Just to match the frame size, fps and pixel aspect ratio:
Custom: 25fps, 1920×1080, no fields. square pixels.
I’d work in 10 bit if you like…but really? The avid is likely going to be 8 bit – unless they’re goign to work in an x resolution (like DNxHD 220x)
