All DVDs are SD.
But MPEG2 can be sized at HD sizes.
For example, the Blu-Ray Spec permits VC-1, h264 or MPEG2 streams @ HD sizes.

I’m not sure I understand:
Some compression tools can do ‘pass through” so you could pass through the video and then recompress the audio (or vice versa.) Both squeeze and epsiode have this.
The replacing of a specific section of Video? Don’t think so.

[John Watts] “Have been struggling to convert an Avid QT Ref file to .avi. The issue is the length, it’s an 80 minute film.
We need to send it to a partner who will do some editing with PPro on windows.
I know that Avid itself will not make anything larger than 2GB. I’ve tried MPEG Streamclip..with nothing but instant “fails”. QT Pro looks like it does it, but I get a weird file with the video playing back at about 4x speed?!?
The Avid I’m working on is a Symphony 6 on PC.
Any suggestions?”Sure do! AVI is a lousy container for video; Premiere Pro can use QuickTime if he’s installed it.
But that just addresses the container, not the codec; you could send them an QuickTime file, with the DNxHD compression of choice (I’m assuming you’re working in HD) and Premiere Pro can see if fine, if he installs QuickTime and DNxHD (quicktime codecs.)
Avid will certainly make something larger than 2GB – but AVI files are usually limited to 2GB – again, again reason to skip AVI files.
You have sorenson squeeze – Are you sending a HD or do you want to post this via FTP? Second, out of curiousity, what was this shot in?

No real cons – it’s using compressor even if you haven’t purchased it. It’s a headless back end conversion. The disadvantage is your computer is working hard while you try and edit.

You have to have the compressor preset applied to a clip to be able to make changes like that. Just changing the raw preset may not work. Apply, adjust, save and you should be good.

Going through handbrake is a mistake – 2 conversions where you should just do one.

I don’t think you’ll get any benefit in adjusting the DVD 90 best quality setting. In other words, what happens when you send it through with the default settings?
(Just send one minute – no need to send it all.)

It’s odd, and if it works okay, I wouldn’t sweat it. I might repair permissions/check the disk for errors….but if it’s fine, don’t stress it.
You might see if you get info, click on the icon and press delete, whether it reverts back to a standard droplet icon.

I have to chime in to agree with Craig – the only time I’ve seen a 30 second cutoff is when using something like Flip4Mac which has a paid version for compression.
I’ve never seen MPEG Streamclip do something like this in any other case.

If you like the job compressor did, mission accomplished. Make sure you’re viewing on a broadcast monitor and not just in FCP – in FCP you want to be looking at 100% (and preferably outputting on a broadcast monitor.)
You really can’t judge compressor vs. RedGiant (or anyone else) scaled up…and then scaled back down again for playback in FCP.
Oh, your budget has the ability to use hardware? Forget all this software stuff. Snell and Wilcox converter or a Teranex.
