Craig,

You must have been doing a compression for a DVD?

Compressor spits out two separate files – an M2V (VIDEO ONLY) and an AC3 file (Audio only.)

Since it succeeded with the video, compressor shows a warning that you’ve got a file with that name – either you have to move the file or change the output from compressor – it’s warning you “HEY – you’re about to overwrite an existing file.”

Since the audio compression didn’t succeed, there’s no corresponding audio file. Why not delete the video portion in compressor and then encode the audio.

There would be no audio attached to any M2V file – it’s an MPEG2, Video only.

Yup. You need to ‘match’ the reel name via modify. Try it with one clip. It’s pretty straightforward – as long as the timecode matches. You may have better results in relinking a timeline over an individual clip, because if the clip is even a single frame different, the relink may fail. Since timeline clips (like subclips) are ‘less’ than the full original clip, it may relink.

Yup, that’s the problem. The codec requires a license and FCE doesn’t have the license – FCP does.

You could find someone to convert it for you to FCP, you could try recording it into a camera/deck that FCE does communicate with (such as HDV).

FCP does ‘frame blending’ – essentially a dissolve between the frames it has.
Motion does an optical ‘morph’ between the frames. It will look much cleaner (but results in a huge file.)

In compressor you can create a custom destination that does not change the file name.

And yes, keep the other specs the same. In fact, use the compressor ProRes422 preset.

Send your footage to motion. Under the properties, roll open timing and then change the timing to “optical flow”.

This will use some technology from shake (which is also in compressor) to create new synthetic frames which look outstanding compared to FCPs frame blending. Then you can play around with the retiming behavior.

No, it’s going to take forever. It’s a flaw in compressor – there’s a way to get this to be faster – separate the downconversion from the compression.
Look at chaining in the compressor manual.

FCP won’t do it. You added a filter that gives the illusion of a different aspect ratio – FCP is still moving the ‘black bars’ as if it was a graphic.

I’d do this in compressor (vs. QuickTime.) But here’s both.

When you export, you should be able to get to all of the QuickTime codecs along with a button that says size. You’ll have to play around and experiment with the right number for the custom dimensions you want along with the crop necessary.

In compressor, you can specific and adjust this on the Geometry tab.
