  • Relinking clips created from tapes to quicktimes, is that possible?

    Hi,

I got a rather odd question here for the avid workflows gurus.

I’ve been handled a feature length project, shot on digibeta, transferred to DVCAM, and then digitized from these tapes, always keeping the timecode. The project was prep, subclips created and groupclips arranged for the double system (audio was recorded on DAT (no sync timecode) and then imported to avid. There was some editing done, at least on some sequences.

I’ve received the original avid project to continue where the previous editor left, but instead of tapes, I’ve been provided with all the digibeta tapes digitized as uncompressed 10bit quicktimes, with the same timecode as the tapes that originally were digitized in the avid.

I can imagine a way to relink an edited sequence to the full quality quicktimes, but, is there a way to link the master clips in the project with the uncompressed quicktimes if they have the same timecode?. I would like to keep all the subclips and groups so I won’t have to resync everything again.

This project has been mishandled from the beginning, and there’s no extra money for it, so I would really need some way to speed things up.

    Cheers,

    Jose

Modify the QuickTime imports to have a reel name matching the tape. Should relink

Thanks, but… could you elaborate it?. Just matching reel name between the two, then relinking, should do it?

Yup. You need to ‘match’ the reel name via modify. Try it with one clip. It’s pretty straightforward – as long as the timecode matches. You may have better results in relinking a timeline over an individual clip, because if the clip is even a single frame different, the relink may fail. Since timeline clips (like subclips) are ‘less’ than the full original clip, it may relink.

You may want to try MetaCheater to create an ALE where you can edit a TAPE ID to match and then use relink to selected in MC for the conform.
