  • Black at end of the timeline

    Greetings all,

I am still learning AVID and have a project I’m outputting to DVD today. Our standard is to close the sequence with 5 seconds of black at the end. I need to follow the company standards and practices our editing staff uses, so I know I must move my cursor to the end of the timeline, hit “add edit” and then hit “trim mode”.

How do I include exactly 5 seconds of black at the end. I believe there is a place where I can type in how long I want the black to be, but I just can’t find it.

I am using Media Composer 5.

    Thank you!
    Julie

    Julie,
Assuming you have a clip of black somewhere in your system, just load it in your source monitor, mark an in point, enter +4:29 and mark an out point. This will give you an exact duration of 5 seconds and zero frames (assuming a 30fps project). Then just edit that black onto the end of your timeline.

I add one frame of any audio & adjust volume to nothing(infinity), and add as much black as you want using filler or trim. This way there is no video to be seen nor audio to be heard. You can add more than 5 seconds and place a mark out at exactly 5 sec. when/if exporting.

    Hi Scott,

I’ll bet I do have a clip of black somewhere that I can use. We are in a new office with a new AVID so we don’t have the same arsenal of nuggets that our main office has.

In the meantime, do you know where, in trim mode, you can type in how long you want your pad to be?

    Hi Ricky,

I’ll have to look at trimming the black during export. I haven’t tried that yet.

    Thanks,

    Hi Julie,
The 1 frame of audio is just a “place holder” for the end of the sequence. After it is at the end of the sequence, go to the front of that one frame and mark In pt., go to the hamburger menu in the source monitor and “Load Filler” (this is Black), mark in then +429, enter and mark out (your duration should be 5:00) and insert that into sequence.

If exporting to a file, mark the sequence in and out where you want (the out pt of the seq. would be 5 sec. after program hits black) when you go to file export, make sure the box is checked to use or enable marks. This is not very detailed (no exact instructions here) but should get you on your way.

Julie, follow Mark’s advise above. You can also create black in the Title tool.

I like to use the add edit to any track and then enter trim mode, type +5. and your add edit will move down in your timeline. Make sure it is exactly 5:00 seconds after your last video or audio by placing your cursor in the black and hit “Alt T” (mark in-out). This will show you the duration of the black.

    Hope that helps.
