Oh wow, yeah, this is painful.

You have objects moving quickly horizontally – the wiper blades. And it is about interlacing. You might not be able to fix this.

Your camera shoots at 60 fields per second. There are 2 fields stored in every frame. TV sets & monitors correctly play this data back, interlacing the fields – to correctly show motion.

For a computer screen, it’s not interlaced. Almost every editorial tool (Avid, FCP, PPro) displays only one field – it still has all the info, it just only displays the first field.

And with fast moving items like this, some of the second field is necessary for it to look ‘right’. When you play it back on an interlaced display (like a TV) you’re good to go.

Easy answer: Don’t worry there’s nothing wrong with your system – as long as your going to DVD or tape, you’re fine.
Hard answer: If you’re going to progressive output (web or QuickTime file for playback on a computer) you might not be able to work around this problem.

John,

I was just using a brute force method – you’re downscaling and compressing. I was trying to separate the two steps.
Uncompressed footage really won’t play back unless you have very fast drives. Since this still had problems, you can abandon this method.

Before you do – does the uncompressed SD file have the same problems in the same (or similar) places as your original compression?) If so, some of your media may be corrupt.

Ok, plan b (c? d?) Just export the sequence DIRECTLY to compressor – skip making the QuickTime file.

Again, the glitches – are they still there?

If I’m a little slow to respond, it’s because I’m at a conference.

I’m saying do the downconvert from 720 to an uncompressed SD file.

THEN give that back to compressor to make a DVD/mpeg-2

I suspect that there’s a bad gop pattern in your original footage and it’s causing problem during the downconvert/compress, which I’m putting into two separate jobs.

Set the autosave to 5 min.
Set the time to 20 seconds
Set the force autosave to 15 min.

Now, every 5 min the avid will save IF you’re not doing anything for a stretch of 20 min. At the 15 min mark, REGARDLESS, it’ll autosave.

Only when you look at it on an interlaced display (TV) does it look fine. On the Avid (the computer) it doesn’t.

This is a normal artifact of interlaced video. On your TV/output it won’t have any problems. If you’re going to put this on the web, remember it has to be deinterlaced (but hey – Squeeze wil do that for you.)

Instead of an alternate compressor, let’s try a workaround.

Could you downconvert it first into uncompressed and THEN make your MPEG-2? If it works, i’ll tell you why it did.

You said you did a clean install and then added FCS3.

Did you do all your software updates? HOw how about repaired permissions? Did you migrate anything from the prior machine?

A professional colorist gets 90 seconds on average per shot, with 100-200 shots per 10 minutes. Figure 2.5-3 hrs for every 10 min….30 min? An expert? A day.

Don’t export to QuickTime. Just send directly to Compressor for the highest quality.

Your data rate for 3 min needs to be around 425-450 with an h.264 setting. Figure scaling it down to 640×360, or 320×180.

You have to build the preset in squeeze. Avid is just sending a QuickTime ref to it.
