By any chance are you using an HDV camera? All editorial tools want to manipulate the raw pixels of what’s captured – and HDV is 1440×1080.

QuickTime is showing you the ‘playback’ quality of full 1080 (not what it’s storing), but visually the way it’s playing back the footage to look correct. It’s actually stored at 1440×1080, but if you played it back like this, everyone would look skinny and tall.

QuickTime is applying an ratio conversion for the pixels to appear correct.

I have a much more thorough explanation, but (depending on you) this might be enough.

You could use compressor which already is set up for this…

In AME, pick any QuickTime setting and adjust it to
Video Codec: ProRes 422, 1920×1080 (if you want 1080), quality @ 100, frame rate matching your frame rate, Aspect Square, field type upper first
Audio codec: Uncompressed 48k, stereo 16 bit.

HDV is really twitchy for it’s timecode. And if you’ve turned on/off the camera during shooting? Even worse. No real good/easy news here.

At least one workflow suggestion – you can search for all the reels across the project and batch capture from the find window. This at least will make sure you’re limited to the one tape.

When you have a stereo track, it shows one tab, Stereo (a1a2). The pan will be automatically set so A1 is L and A2 is right. The two tabs that make up this one track will have the gain levels identical.

To separate this, go to the Link menu and uncheck stereo pair.

I’ve been at a conference the past week…so I didn’t see anything till today when I came out of my shell.

I’m curious – what specific SD format are you working with? There is a chance that you’re working 720×486 and Toast isn’t recognizing it. We can troubleshoot this in Toast or Compressor (or anything else for that manner)

Could you be a bit more specific than the result isn’t professionally acceptable? The film purist in me says all dvds (and SD) looks like hell compared to the Super 16mm prints we used to make.

Last, I’m curious on how you’re judging the DVD – on a computer or on a TV set.

Came across Consol.com and PortalVideo that do this too.

From what I can tell, these groups seem to be picking is the ‘large organization’ model; get producers/shooters in the field and editors doing fine cut/finishing. With HD, I can’t but see the big bottleneck being the media quality (and no, h.264 doesn’t cut it.)

It’s particularly damning with ISPs (like comcast) having caps on data; it’ll kill any independent work on these sorts of services.

This might be a red flag. What’s wrong with your system that exporting to compressor doesn’t work?

On your instinct over the drive: Let’s rule out the drive then. export a QuickTime to that drive and see if it as has a compression problem.

Hell, after that, try compressing a one or two minute section that’s challenging and see if it works.

Have you tried the apple iPresets in Compressor?
The iPhone, AppleTV are true MP4 files and look gorgeous.

I do use other tools too, but you first should explore what you own…FFMPEG (Command line) is also a wonderful tool for this – there are a couple inexpensive GUI front ends like FFMpegX
