You’re choosing the wrong preset

ProRes supports all flavors of HD. Look at which setting you are choosing carefully and make sure your source is full HD too

You can also change sequence settings for individual sequences. I’d suggest you go thru all of the presets/sequence settings/etc. to get a feel for what’s there and how to use them. Good luck!

I went into the codec settings and upped the resolution from 720 x 586, to 1920 x 1080 (I’m using adobe media encoder if that’s any consolation) and though, yes problem solved. However the encoded video is just 720 x 576 footage dropped on a 1920 x 1080 black background. Bit like letterboxing, but there’s black banners at the sides as well as top. Hope I’ve made that understandable.

Im going to upload a screenshot of my settings, tell me what im doing wrong. Im in UK so need to use PAL preferably if thats any help.

That is a horrible picture of your settings…

You should be converting HD files to HD files ProRes. No SD.

You could use compressor which already is set up for this…

In AME, pick any QuickTime setting and adjust it to
Video Codec: ProRes 422, 1920×1080 (if you want 1080), quality @ 100, frame rate matching your frame rate, Aspect Square, field type upper first
Audio codec: Uncompressed 48k, stereo 16 bit.
