I work for a large company and they finally approved and created a place for video on our company portal (intranet). The developer needs MP4 video files. When I use compressor or streamclip, I get poor results. I have not attempted to scale the HD (shooting with Sony F350) video files before compressing to Mp4 and it might work, however I would like to atchieve it in a one step process. Most other formats do compress well. Right now I am giving the web guy H.264 mov files and he is using flash to encode the Mp4 with great results and there seem to be no scaleing issues. My MP4’s look very pixilated even at high data rates and large file sizes. Should I use another piece of software or is there something that I might be missing. Are any FCP (mac) usere having problems getting good results compressing to Mp4. Any help would be appreciated. I will have more quality control and save him time if I can get results like he is getting using adobe.

If you can find it… “Visualhub”.
They stopped making it a couple years ago I think but somebody you know might have a copy somewhere.
My favorite for making H.264 mp4’s.

Have you tried the apple iPresets in Compressor?
The iPhone, AppleTV are true MP4 files and look gorgeous.

I do use other tools too, but you first should explore what you own…FFMPEG (Command line) is also a wonderful tool for this – there are a couple inexpensive GUI front ends like FFMpegX

The presets do look good, however the file extention is a M4v and not mp4 so the developer has to re-encode. Is this not the case? I do want to use what I already have, just not sure how to get good results. When I create a mp4, the resulting file looks poor. When I make a M4v it looks fine but has to be re-encoded by my web guy.

Just change the extension. Should be no need to re-encode. They are M4v files are MPEG-4 files.

In Compressor, you can actually choose what extension to use beforehand in the Inspector.
