    In need of help!

I have a Sony PD170 SD camera and the Avid Media Composer editing software. I am importing video via “Host 1394” also known as “IEEE 1394” and fire wire. I do not have Adrenaline, Avid Mojo or Nitris. I go straight from the camera to the computer. The problem I am having is I get horizontal lines in my video when playing the video in Avid or when capturing. These lines are NOT seen when played on the camera. I’ve even hooked the camera up to the TV in order to better see the video and it looks fine. Only when I put it into Avid do I see these lines. The lines seem most noticeable in pans or moving subjects in the footage. I’ve been all over the settings in Avid, can’t correct this problem. It would seem that it’s in the signal from the camera to the Avid. ??? Any thoughts?? This has caused some major issues in my projects!

    Sounds like interlacing issues.

Only when you look at it on an interlaced display (TV) does it look fine. On the Avid (the computer) it doesn’t.

This is a normal artifact of interlaced video. On your TV/output it won’t have any problems. If you’re going to put this on the web, remember it has to be deinterlaced (but hey – Squeeze wil do that for you.)

Thank you for the feedback Jeff.

Actually, when I squeeze the video through Sorensen, the lines in the video look worse. When I view it on the camera, or as I said, a TV monitor, it’s fine. Only in the Avid and once exported. I’m at a loss. In ideas on interlacing settings I can change that may help?
I’ve pasted a link to a video clip to show what it is I’m seeing. The lines are toward the end of the video, in the windshield wipers. Hopefully you can view it and it give you more of an idea of the problem. Almost looks like the old VHS tracking problem.

Oh wow, yeah, this is painful.

You have objects moving quickly horizontally – the wiper blades. And it is about interlacing. You might not be able to fix this.

Your camera shoots at 60 fields per second. There are 2 fields stored in every frame. TV sets & monitors correctly play this data back, interlacing the fields – to correctly show motion.

For a computer screen, it’s not interlaced. Almost every editorial tool (Avid, FCP, PPro) displays only one field – it still has all the info, it just only displays the first field.

And with fast moving items like this, some of the second field is necessary for it to look ‘right’. When you play it back on an interlaced display (like a TV) you’re good to go.

Easy answer: Don’t worry there’s nothing wrong with your system – as long as your going to DVD or tape, you’re fine.
Hard answer: If you’re going to progressive output (web or QuickTime file for playback on a computer) you might not be able to work around this problem.

AWESOME!! Thank you soooo much for the info!! I did a test on the windshield wiper clip and bypassed QuickTime and exported straight to my desktop. I could then squeeze it and import it into DVDit, which is what I use for menuing ect. Burned it to a DVD and played it on a TV monitor. It looks GREAT! No lines! You have no idea how much stress this just lifted!! Thanks Jeff!

One more question for you. What is your suggestion for the best Sorenson Squeeze format to use??

Denise – sorry not to get back sooner – I’ve been at a conference.

I’m on squeeze 7 – If your piece is short (under 60 min), then their DVD setting is probably pretty good by default.

Just make sure you’re NOT deinterlacing.

Any chance I could get a copy of that video? I’d like to show it to some people…just the wacky moments with the wipers…

    Hello Jeff,

Sorry for not getting back with you sooner. I’m in the Army Reserves and been out of town a great deal.

Sure you can get a copy of the video. What’s the best way for me to get it to you? Can you copy it from this site, or do you need another format?
