Oh God, you don’t need to clean install! What do you think this is, windows? 😀

Some items in your trash may have either a nasty set of permissions or the filesystem thinks they’re busy. I’ve had this occur even through a restart. There are a number of Mac OS X utilities that will do a force empty of trash, with my personal favorite being Onyx –because it does a bunch of other very useful “monthly cleaning” functions through its automation Tab.

If you choose to use it, make sure you let it do it’s verification and checking of your disks, just to be safe.

Adam,

There are two different methods that you can get material from motion into Final Cut Pro. Likely, both methods will stutter on your timeline unless rendered. Rest assured they will be at full quality for final output.

Method a) import the actual motion project and drop it onto Final Cut Pro’s timeline. The advantage of this is anytime you want you can right click and say open in editor, and it will open motion right up. The cool part about this, is that any changes you make, when you save, will be instantly updated your Final Cut Pro timeline.

Method B) export from motion in a QuickTime, with a codec that supports an alpha channel. That would be either the animation codec or ProRes4444. Depending on the speed of your drive and/or the speed of your system, you’ll find that this playback stutters here as well.

If you want elements from Final Cut Pro to be in motion, select those elements, right-click and choose send to motion project.

Katie,

First, I’d suggest contacting the festival people–it sounds like they’re expecting everybody’s submissions to be in the HD, they may be perfectly fine with you submitting in DVC Pro 25.

I wouldn’t use Final Cut Pro for the uprez, but instead, I’d go through compressor. The problem that you’re going to run into, is question of the different aspect ratios. Either you’re going to end up with pillar boxing (large black bars on the left and right) or you’ll end up cropping the top and bottom off the work.

The other big trick is to throw the switch for compressor’s quality so it’s at the highest for the upscaling.

It’s tools you own, which you may have to fiddle with it you get it right.

How are you judging that it doesn’t look good on your TV? Did you already make a blu-ray disc? If so, how?

First, you’re going to find that everyone has adopted the idea that you shouldn’t directly edit h.264 footage – that it’s best to transcode to ProRes.

Second, one of the tricky things you learn about video, particularly inside of Final Cut, is that the method of plugging your Macintosh into a TV set is in a reliable way to monitor the quality of your footage. Final Cut uses for the number of compromises to be will play the footage correctly in real time–unless you use a hardware output card is connected to a broadcast monitor.

Last, your original question asks about Blu-ray; did you actually make the disc? If so, did you do it through compressor or through the share command inside of Final Cut.

Matt,

You’re going to find that coming from Avid, a number of things ‘seem backward.’ Some stuff translates, some you’ll have to accept.

It sounds like these are falling into the latter category.

CMD 1 will return you to the viewer monitor. So, F10, CMD-1 (or purchase quickkeys and have it make that a macro for you.)

THere isn’t’ a way for the playhead to stay at the head of a clip in the timeline – but going to the end is how Avid works also.

I suggest that the best choice may be:
•One that matches your output needs (if you’re mixing HD & SD, and the result is SD to the web…SD all the way)
•One that matches where most of your format sourced (XDCam + DVCProHD where 90% is XDCAM).

It really really depends on the type of footage your mixing and what you’re doing with it at the end…..

Likely your export isn’t sending out the alpha channel.

Millions of Colors + (The plus is what we need).

Animation or ProRes 4444 codecs. Nothing else.

All SD is the same number of pixels – 720×480 (486).

There’s merely a flag to say “hey, anamorphic”. In Avid, you do this by right click on the composer monitor and choosing 16×9.

Avid ‘owns’ any media you import. It gets made into video media – regardless if it came from a 10megapixel picture – inside of your avid, it’s about a megapixel. How you import it (and how the import settings are adjusted) makes a huge difference on how it’s displayed.

So, you’re running into both of those issues. In your avid, you want to be in SD, but have your monitors set to 16×9…and could you tell us what the import settings were?
