    Hi

I’m just about to buy my first Mac Book Pro to run FCP on. My current work is not graphics intense nor is it HD but that is likely to change over the years I use the Mac. I know that the more you spend the better but which one should I get – will an Intel Core i7 make a huge difference to my life for instance? Any tips will be gratefully received.

Always the biggest and fastest you can afford.

    Yes, get the i7

    I second Chris,
On laptops there is always only one to buy: The faster one.

Thanks for your responses. Is it worth boosting memory from 4GB to 8GB? Also I’ve been reading on the Apple Mac forum of a user having issues with FCP 7 and the 15″ Mac Book Pro with i7. Anyone else had a similar experience?

I’m using FCS on the 17″ MBP without any particular problems – it’s a bit slower than a good desktop system and even a 17″ screen is a bit small for everything I want to have up on it, but it’s doing the job 🙂
BTW I’m using an esata adapter for my storage, which you can only use on the 17″ MBP, so I wouldn’t use a smaller one. You don’t NEED that extra memory you mention, but (like the faster processor) it’s worth having if you can handle the extra money.

[Miriam O'Byrne] ” Is it worth boosting memory from 4GB to 8GB?”
    Sure.
Even if FC can not use the whole RAM, don’t hesitate in loading the 8GBs.

    Add the word TODAY.

I’m new but I think I read SSD is not good for video editing in general..? I imagine I should go for 7,200 and not 5,400 for the HDD? If it comes down to battery life as opposed to speed then I think I’d go for the latter but I’m really interested in other people’s thoughts. Thanks!

While you were discussing what to buy, your computer has duplicated his performance.
You’ve been very, very lucky Miriam!!!

    That’s right.

In terms of energy, the 5.400 would be better, but we really do not use much FC on batteries.
About the SSD, the only shortcoming is the price.
    That’s the future.
