text export to FCP
Posted by Patrick Paulson on February 24, 2011 at 4:08 pmI have created text in Motion (color w a grey drop shadow). I have selected “alpha+color” for the export.
Back ground is “transparent” in my canvas. When I bring it in to FCP and try to super it over my video on track one, I get my text with a solid black backround…no superimpose. What am I missing here? Thanks for your help.

February 24, 2011 at 4:13 pmMake sure in Motion you don’t have a solid background. To do this go up to Edit, Project Properties. Change the Background option to “Transparent”.

February 24, 2011 at 4:27 pmHey Patrick
You could just save the Motion project and import the motion file into FCP without exporting it.
That should work.

February 24, 2011 at 4:33 pmHi Dave, thanks for the response. I want to have control of my video and text (gfx) independent of each other (video on track one gfx on track two). If I “round trip” it from FCP to MOTN then what I get is my text and video together on one channel.
When I export and select only “alpha” instead of “color+alpha” I get my text and my shadow, of course I no longer have the color, just white text and white shadow. I can’t figure out why it’s not sending me my color text with the shadow in a format that will super right over the video channel when I select “color+alpha”. -

February 24, 2011 at 4:37 pmIf you want to Export it out Set It to QuickTime’s Animation codec. Make sure it is set to Millions Color +. The plus stands for the transparency you want. You can also use ProRes 4444. Best of luck and hope this helps.

February 24, 2011 at 5:01 pmLikely your export isn’t sending out the alpha channel.
Millions of Colors + (The plus is what we need).
Animation or ProRes 4444 codecs. Nothing else.

February 24, 2011 at 9:07 pmThanks Jeff,
Both Animation and 4444 work as expected. I was trying to export in Pro Res 422 (timeline setting) and no luck…Now I know. Thank you. -

February 24, 2011 at 9:08 pmThanks Stephen! That works. Jeff also pointed out that Pro Res 4444 will work and it did.
Thanks again.
