So Im in the viewer, and are inserting clips from it into the timeline via F9,F10 etc. But when the clip is inserted into the timeline the timeline becomes the active window.
This seems backward, if Im finding multiple sections from the viewer to bring into the timeline, why wouldn’t the viewer stay active, instead Iv got to click back on the viewer to re activate it each time.
NB: Is there also anyway that the playhead can stay at the beginning of the clip when inserted to timeline instead of going to the end of the clip?

Hope its something simple because coming from AVID this particular aspect of FCP seems really backward.

    Cheers.

    Matt,

You’re going to find that coming from Avid, a number of things ‘seem backward.’ Some stuff translates, some you’ll have to accept.

It sounds like these are falling into the latter category.

CMD 1 will return you to the viewer monitor. So, F10, CMD-1 (or purchase quickkeys and have it make that a macro for you.)

THere isn’t’ a way for the playhead to stay at the head of a clip in the timeline – but going to the end is how Avid works also.

“Q” toggles focus between Canvas/Timeline and Viewer … so just press F9 then Q or F10 then Q etc … and yes, it is a bit backwards, or rather, there should be some way for the user to dictate if and where the focus should move.

    More details for your consideration:

If you edit footage to the timeline using the keyboard shortcuts (F9, F10 etc) then the Timeline window takes focus after the edit.
But if you edit footage using drag and drop to the Canvas window overlays (or buttons) then the Viewer window keeps focus after the edit.
