It’s essentially identical to a RAID 5, but with greater fault protection – two drives can die, rather than one.
Does it slow it down over Raid 5? yup. Does it provide a higher level of protection for –[Thomas Morter-Laing] “The data on the RAID is very important” – also yes.I’d sleep better at nights with a Raid 5…and really well when it’s a raid 6.
Of course, if the speed hit worries you, you could always measure the speed of the drive to see if it’s significant with your editorial format of choice.

March 7, 2011 at 11:13 am in reply to: ProRes footage is still choppy in viewer (not in canvas)[Emily Hauze] “other footage that I have (much higher quality, in XDCam) that runs perfectly”
Actually, your XDCam stuff requires less demand than ProRes.Download the AJA speed test to measure the drive speed – It has to be about twice what XDCam is for it to work.
Two workarounds:
If it works in the timeline you could always just drop the footage there and blade away what you don’t like. Sloppy? yes…but workable.
Another thought: why not transcode to XDCam? Ideal? No, but we know it works.Best,

Craig,
What frame rates was it shot with? BluRay can be 1080p24 or 1080i30.
If they were both shot at 30, I’d just go interlaced and call it a day (the interlaced footage will look fine on a 1080 player.)
At 24? Graham Nattress makes an excellent set of plugins to help handle footage problems like this inside of FCP.

March 7, 2011 at 11:01 am in reply to: 1280×720 opens as 960×720 in Quicktime Player? The footage is 100% fine.
The camera used nonsquare pixels to capture the information (at 960×720). QT7, VLC and FCP all read the pixel size metadata and stretch it out to look appropriate.
Compressor (and squeeze, episode) will also read this metadata correctly and when you give it to your clients, it’ll look fine.
You can’t give them the footage as it was shot anyway – they won’t have the DVCProHD codec, unless they have the proapps.

Sure two ways. I think 4.02 can keyframe CC. Add a color corrector (or Color Effect) to the clip; desaturate. Keyframe later and return the saturation to normal. Don’t use curves – just the saturation control.

DV-PAL (dv25) will be fine. Yes, ProRes would be better. But DV PAL will work just fine and will work decently on your system.

I can see two ways of doing this…
Create you text, turn off the face, turn on the outline. Right click on the word color and apply a Randomize Parameter behavior.
Take the amount to 1 and play with frequency and noisiness.Or…keyframe the color and change the keyframe interpolation to constant – so the value stays the same until the next keyframe.

March 6, 2011 at 3:41 pm in reply to: shoot 25fps or 29.97 for delivery in both formats?I’d suggest shooting at 23.98 – a slight increase of speed to 25 and traditional 3:2 technique to make it 29.97.
That’s the way an Avid Symphony handles it.

Forget HD SpeedTest.
Download AJA’s Speed test, designed specifically for Video, and let’s measure your drive!

Two thoughts:
One, you can’t judge if Vimeo’s playback is dropping frames; that’s actually a problem on your individual system. Something’s not working there (such as flash) without dropping a frame. If you were to rip back the video from Vimeo and find the frames missing, then yes, Vimeo is dropping frames. Try a tool such as DamnVid for that.
Second, Vimeo publishes exactly what your upload settings should be here:
https://vimeo.com/help/compressionHope that helps. I’ve had good success with the Youtube preset in Compressor 3.5 for Vimeo videos.
