You can capture the video and then grab the QuickTime files from inside of the Capture Scratch folder and then give that to your kids.

They’ll then each import the QuickTime files – if it’s a format that iMovie doesn’t like, it’ll transcode.

I’d ‘test’ it with a couple of clips so you don’t get caught finding out the import is going to take an hour.

March 20, 2011 at 2:34 pm in reply to: Instead of video got white bg with compressor

I was restating your problem to make sure that I understood it.

“If you send something from FCP to Compressor, sometimes it ends up in a white screen?”

Is this correct? If not, then please try communicating it again.

    So, just restating your problem:
If you send something from FCP to Compressor, sometimes it ends up in a white screen?

Sounds like there’s a problem with the communications between the two.
Workout (not a fix): export a QuickTime (not QuickTime conversion) and put that in compressor.

The fix? It’s an odd problem:
What kind of footage is it?

March 19, 2011 at 12:19 pm in reply to: Converting HD timeline to SD…

I can think of at least two different ways to do this….

But the easiest will be to toss the HD sequence into an SD sequence (nesting)

I understand what you’re talking about- I erefer to it as a digital master.

Except all your stills, generated items (text, etc) were uncompressed until you export. Then they get crunched in your codec of your timeline. Which you then take to compressor to compress into a second codec is a second hit of your information.

When you “send to” compressor- all those elements get handled as if they were uncompressed.

Its faster to export to QuickTime; but technically you get a better end file when you send to compressor.

Oh yeah, fop is kludgy with it’s handling of mixed frame rates and scaling (compared to compressor)

March 19, 2011 at 3:29 am in reply to: Rename .mov to .m4v or .mp4 ???

If you encode as an .mp4 or m4v (same thing), you can rename the extension to other things (like .mov and .flv) and the respective players will handle them. It doesn’t work in reverse. 🙁

A bunch of years ago I thought the same thing – Steve Martin (of Ripple Training) pointed out what the Apple engineers explained to him: two compressions are worse than one. I know you said – “sequence render settings are set to something sub-par” but it’s still two compressions.

[Nikki Francis] “I’m also puzzled about the file being totally missing.

The file is malformed – compressor keeps (somewhere, I’m sure) a cache – but it doesn’t build/show you the project midway – only once it’s finished.

I don’t know if it’s due to its size, the fact you’re using a bunch of stills (what format are they in? ) or a piece of bad media.

I think it’s likely the latter two. Try bumping up the Still Cache in the prefs. Try sending the front half and the back half of the sequence separately.

If it’s a question of RAM – bumping the stills cache should fix it. If it’s a piece of bad media, it should show up on the first half/last half method.

    yes that’s an HD file.

You said it came up 480i, which means it was SD video.
