Capture with FCP and edit with iMovie
I have offered to capture some footage for some school kids, but they told me that they are editing with iMovie. Will I be able to import the footage with FCP and give them the source files? Or will I have to convert the files?

You can capture the video and then grab the QuickTime files from inside of the Capture Scratch folder and then give that to your kids.
They’ll then each import the QuickTime files – if it’s a format that iMovie doesn’t like, it’ll transcode.
I’d ‘test’ it with a couple of clips so you don’t get caught finding out the import is going to take an hour.

Depends on how you capture them. FCP supports a LOT more codecs then iMovie does.

Possibly again it depends on how you capture them.
For example if they do not have FCP on their computer then they will not even be able to play FCP specific video codecs.
I would play it safe and just capture the footage for them in iMovie.
