Other broadcasters will have similar (but less stringent) delivery requirements.

Quicktime 7 SHOULD open an AVI even if it says it doesnt’ know the codec.

It sounds like it’s an MPEG2 video of some strange flavor. How about if you duplicate it (to prevent damaging the original), rename the file foo.TS (as in transport stream) and THEN see if MPEG streamclip likes it.

I am racking my brain to see if I can come up with another OSX tool…VLC CAN do conversions, but they’re not exactly easy…

Can you reproduce this?

In other words, does the same video always give you white….or is it random. Sometimes the same video sent over twice will give you a correct encode….or sometimes a white screen.

Saying “FLV” is like saying I want a bottle of alcohol. Which sized bottle? Which type of alcohol?
You’re describing the bottle (generically) rather than saying what goes in it.

That doesn’t mean you’ll get the best quality output – merely that it works.

What format are you starting with? From what editorial tool?

If you’re just going to youtube – you might be thrilled to know that they will let you upload much larger files (takes much longer), but they have pretty decent encoders on their end.

But what I think you want is a tool on your end that will build a decent looking h.264 file
After all thats, what youtube recommends

Youtube uses the command line version of FFMPEG
There are a number of free GUI based (rather than command line) tools;

Well, the easiest is to do is set up something the way you like, then under the drop down (for any of the render items) choose “make template” and build a template of the exact methods you like under the “Render Settings Template window” and save the settings you like. Then go through each one and change the defaults for yourself.

Next time you go to render everything is defaulted exactly the way you want it.

Make any in/out selections on an element by alt I/ Alt O

Select a layer. Press I or O and you’ll jump to it’s in/out point.

Reasonable, is a hard question. To me, it’s reasonable that 30 mins of uncompressed SD is 30 gigs. And 30 min of uncompressed HD is nearly 200 gigs.

You can absolutely get the finished work down to 2-3 gigs (after all, MPEG2 encoding for a DVD has to be smaller than this!).

It would help to know what sort of format you’re working with (is it HD? What kind?) and what you’re intending to do with it at the end? Youtube? DVD? BluRay?

Two ways:plural eyes should do this magically for you – I mean really automate this syncing of separate sound. It’s ‘the’ workflow for DSLR uses.

Method two (this should blow your mind.) When you get close to the spot…hold down the shift key while you drag the playhead – FCP will move in smaller (still not sample sized) increments – I think it’s 1/100th. You *must* then mark an inpoint and the audio will slightly shift.

Last: honestly? A sub frame out of sync issue can’t truly be seen. Has to be at least two plus frames out for it to be noticed.

I’ve done a bunch of searching for MME – I can’t seem to find it as a codec.

Would you open this up in QuickTime and see if it gives you the same codec (it’ll tell you it’s missing of course…). Get info (cmd I) should do this…

Not that I’m aware of – it’s just that every year brings new formats…

Why don’t you ask your specific question here and we’ll step through the choices.

What format are you working with (not the camera make – is it DV? HDV? h.264 from a DSLR)
What do you intend to do with it after it’s edited?
