November 16, 2016 at 2:29 pm in reply to: Media Composer 8.6.3/8.6.4 issues with Mac OS 10.11.6?I typically bring everything in via the Canon XF AMA plugin, but then transcode everything to DNxHD for editing. To have the program not even want to start up just because those files are in the AMA Plugins folder is baffling…I guess maybe because it’s reading them during the startup sequence?

Thanks Shane…I kind of figured that was the answer, but wanted to throw it out there just in case I was wrong.

If you could guarantee you’d only use X version of Avid with X version of your computer in its current config, then yes you could get by without ever having to do Avid upgrades. But eventually, you’ll probably want to upgrade your OS or Avid will come out with some cool thing in an upgrade…and that’s when you start having issues with software that’s stuck in time. I’ve owned my Avid software for many years and never regretted it…it’s pretty much the only platform I use, other than an occasional spin on an old Final Cut Pro machine. As a small business owner, it’s a good expense tax-wise and nowhere near the most expensive thing I have to spend money on year-to-year.

Hi Michael – Thanks for the reply. I’m already signed up with Avid for the next year, so I’m committed…which is part of why I’m trying to figure out a way forward on both hardware and software. My Early 2009 Mac Pro is running OK at the moment, but I can tell with every MC update that the CPU is falling a little more behind, performance-wise. Not really doing anything connected to 2/4K at the moment, but I know it’s probably going to come into play in the next year. Was hoping that new 5K iMac was approved, as it seems like a good compromise between what I’ve got and going full trashcan Mac. Have run Avid on an HP Z series before…if I went back to PC, that would be the only way. Wish Avid and Apple would talk to each other…seems like the end users are getting caught more and more in the update incompatibility web…

December 16, 2014 at 2:43 am in reply to: C300 Replacement Top Handle recommendations – with cold shoe for LCDI added a 1/4-20 shoe to a NATO handle from Wooden Camera and then mounted the whole thing on top of my Redrock C300 cage to replace my Canon OEM top handle. Of course, that bill is about $275 if buying new…I managed to pick mine up off Ebay for a whole lot less than that. The Helmet Coldshoe Handle kit from Zacuto works well, too…but also pricey.

December 1, 2014 at 8:39 pm in reply to: Unable to AMA Link to C300 Files (Media Composer 7.0.4)It also helps to back up your C300 cards to a hard drive (internal best, external with plenty of throughput), if you’re going to edit the clips via AMA. Much better performance than trying to do it straight from the CF cards. However, make sure your backups have the EXACT SAME file/folder structure that they do on the CF cards or Avid won’t be able to find them. Canon XF Utility works great for this…

November 18, 2014 at 4:48 pm in reply to: Calibrating IMAC display for Grading on Avid and DavinciHey Shane – Besides Blackmagic, do you have any personal recommends for an I/O box? I’ve had pretty good luck with my Matrox MX02 Mini over the past 4 years until recently, when Avid/Apple/Matrox got out of whack on their software updates…now I can’t watch anything externally without putting my MC into low rez mode to combat the audio sync & Max Headroom glitch issues…
