You’re mostly right…at home you’re usually watching 24p converted to 30 frames per second (usually 60 fields, interlaced).
But you’re missing one very imortant fact: 24p converted to 60i looks NOTHING like something shot in 60i. This is the main reason why “Raiders of the Lost Ark” on network TV looks different than the local news that follows it. It’s also why most prime-time TV was shot on film (and still 24p if done digitally now).
Now that’s the “film-to-video” thing but it’s important to understand because the METHOD for converting 24 fps film to NTSC video is EXACTLY what the Panasonic DVX-100 does in its 24p mode. It takes 24 progressive images per second (just like film) and it does the conversion in-camera to 60i. So you get that LOOK that I mentioned before even though it’s really NTSC video.
Now, in 24pAdvance mode, the camera does something different. It turns the 24p images it takes into NTSC video, but in a different way. It doesn’t look good watching it back from the camera but it lets you put it into a computer and convert it back to 24p video.
So if you’re going to play it on an NTSC monitor, you’d use the normal mode, but if you were going to copy it to film you’d use the Advanced mode.

Most people try to have enough drive space available that this isn’t really that common, but yes, I’ve done it several times in the past without any problems.
Sometimes I’ve had something like a 3 hour ballet that I’ve rendered. (So now I have 6 hours of video on my drive.) I’ll then decide to change something…maybe I decide to brighten the midtones some…if I render it all again I’d have 9 hours of video on my drive.
So in a case like that, before the second render I’ll erase the original render files since I’ll be saving nearly 40 GBs by doing so! But normally, no, this is not something I do with every project.

Well, audio doesn’t have a “frame rate.” If it’s digital then it is “sampled” so many times per second.
DV video, for exmaple has 29.97 frames per second but its audio is sampled 48,000 times each second.
What you need to do is to make a custom project setting in Final Cut where the video frame-rate is what you want it to be and the audio sample rate matches whatever the original footage is.

No, the project file is one file, the render files are dozens of files kept in their own folder.
It is impossible for you to tell which render files are which since Final Cut gives them long, number names that make sense to it, but not to humans.
The only way to do it is to simply pick all of them at once. So yes, you’ll have to re-render. That’s the price for freeing up the drive space. You have to decide if it’s worth it or not. Remember, the more changing and RE-rendering you’ve done to a project, the more space you’ll save. So maybe think about which projects you should do this to and which ones won’t save you much space.

Just go into the Render folder for each project and erase the QT files within it. (Be sure to leave the folder itself, though.)
The next time you open that project Final Cut will tell you that it can’t find the render files. It will ask if you want to search for them. Just tell it “ok” or “skip” (something like that) and the project will open just fine. Nothing will be rendered, so you’ll have to re-render, but that’s the only drawback.
(Even if you re-render everything you’ll probably still save space since it saves every render you do. So if you’ve rendered-changed-rendered something a few times you have multiple copies of that same event in the render folder. By erasing and re-rendering you only have one copy of that event in the render folder whereas before you probably had more than one.)

It should work well enough. The biggest bottleneck will be storage as I think an external firewire drive is your only option. You’re not going to get the most amazing performance out of it in terms of real-time previews or DVD-compression times, but you should be able to get editing work done with those formats without too much trouble.
The one I can’t say for certain is DVCPROHD. I have heard of people editing it on Powerbooks, however, so you should be fine as that computer should out-do any Powerbook.

Click that box that says V1 and see how it changes. Explore those devices and you’ll figure out what you need.

Why don’t you use Compressor to make your MPEG2? Correct me if I’m wrong – but wouldn’t that make a better quality MPEG2 file?
=====No, the quality is the same. Compressor WILL, however, give you more optoins. So you have the ability to do more…perhaps fit more onto a disc. But if you use the same settings you should get the same results between the 2.
Scream: Did you update to QT7 recently? You have to buy QT Pro again with each version. I suspect you upgraded from 6-Pro to 7-regular and that’s why the option is gone. You can buy 7-Pro on the Apple web page. Let us know if that’s not actually the problem…it was just my first guess.

After Effects will run in the Rosetta emulation for now. It should work, just slower.
You’ll have to wait for the next full upgrade of AE to get the Intel-native version. Adobe won’t say when that will be, but they usually come out with new versions every 18-24 months. (I don’t know when the last AE came out, however.)

He should be buying external storage, yes.
DV footage should take up about 13 GB per hour. Is that about what he’s getting? But yes, with a 60 to 100 GB system drive you’ll run out of space quickly at that rate.
