I was thinking that you could perhaps avoid this issue by calling your local Apple store and very nicely asking them to request a copy from Apple for you. Offer to pay for it right there on the phone with a credit card.

You could then go to the Apple store once they get it and trade in your disc in person.

There’s no official policy for this, but it’s possible it might work if you find a sympathetic store manager.

But what are the chances that you’ll come across a situation where a cloned drive can’t help you during that one week your disc is away?

Certainly problems can and do happen, but you’re worried that not only will one system will fail, and not only will the backup fail to help, but that both of these terrible events would coincide with the 1 particular week you’ve happened to mail your discs away?

I believe in preparing for the worst, yes, but this seems overly “Murphy’s Law-ish” to me.. Like brining 3 cameras to a 1-camera shoot just in case the first 2 happen to break at the same time.

Ah, that’s very similar, just within iTunes.

You can do the exact same thing to a song in iTunes. By right-clicking and selecting “Show in Finder” it will take you to the actual Song’s file. Since iTunes does its own organizing it would take you much longer to go find it yourself, so this is a very useful feature if you’re looking for a song file.

HOWEVER, I hardly ever use it, because after I convert a file I simply drag it right out of iTunes into my project folder. That makes a copy of it in my folder. I then erase the one in iTunes (which also erases the original file from the hard drive).

I find doing it that way to be very quick as well. But if you want to use the ‘show in finder’ method, that works too!

This kind of thing is usually saved for the NAB convention.

Getting a dual-DVI card would work, but it would mean that you’d have to give up your 17″ studio display.

But it looks like what you’re doing SHOULD work with that gefen device, yes.

At this point I’d suggest calling up gefen and saying “hey, I’m trying to do this, is this right?” Even if the problem isn’t their problem they probably haev enough experience to recognize what’s going on.

What context are you talking?

For one example: You can right-click (or Control-click for 1-button mouse users) on a Dock icon and select “Show in Finder.” That will open a finder window of the folder where that Application lives and highlight it.

So if you right-click iTunes on the dock and say “Show in Finder” it will open the ‘Applications’ folder and highlight the iTunes program.

Is that what you’re talking about? I think that “Show in Finder” may appear a few other places so if you’re thinking of something different than this, let us know where you’re talking about.

Combining any two formats in Final Cut will require you to render whichever format is different from the project-settings.

You’re much better off converting the files that are different to the same format BEFORE you import them into your project. It takes some time up front but you’ll save a ton of time while editing.

Is this splitter just a Y-cable, or something like that?

I suspect you’ll need something that actually amplifies the signal instead of just splitting it. I think the video card is not putting out a signal strong enough to run two monitors from just one plug. You’d need something like this:

You are aware that the TV and the Studio monitor will display the exact same thing though, right? You’d have dual-monitors spread across 3 screens. Is it something like a classroom where you want others to be able to view one of your two monitors?

“Master” can refer to many things, all them meaning “Final Version.” So you could have a master tape, meaning the totally finished project, or simply a master timeline which would be the project that all your elements are being combined in.

“Daily” is an old film term. You used to shoot all day, and hopefully you’d have people working overnight to process the film for you. The next morning you could see what you shot the day before. Those were the “dailies.” I suppose that these days it’s fine to refer to the video tapes you’ve shot that day as the dalies. If a video person uses the term I’d assume that’s what they mean by it.

I was never a film person, so if someone else has a better description than that, please enlighten me. That’s how I’ve always understood it, though.
