If you ran the program from the Apple menu (instead of downloading from apple.com) then you’re done. It downloads and installs.

  • 1) I don’t have a solution for this. Your the first person I’ve ever heard of who uses save boxes this way, so I’m not hopeful you’ll ever see it changed.

    2) On a Mac, if I’m in a Finder window and see a file I want to open, I drag the file onto that program on the Dock. I don’t see how copying it and then going to “Open” and pasting it there is anything but a waste of time.

As for the “Save As” trick you have, I suggest just using Spotlight. For example, let’s say you’re looking at your “New York Trip” folder in Finder and you want to save a website there. Rather than copying anything, just go into the save dialog box in Safari and type “New York Trip” into the built-in Spotlight that’s inside the Save window. It’s different, yes, but it seems just as effective to me.

    3) Type ‘Flower’ in Spotlight and then pick “Show All” right underneath it. You get a Finder window with your search inside it. In the upper right you see a ‘+’ button. This gives you more ways to narrow the search. Pick “Kind Is” and then “Image” and then “JPEG.”

Then hit ‘+’ again and add a date range or whatever else you want. You can even save your search from there as a Smart Folder which will be constantly updated as your computer changes. Smart Folders are reason alone to use a Mac. If you’re not using them yet, spend some time learning them and they’ll make your life easier.

So that’s 2 out of 3. You say you’ve got more. Don’t hold back, we’re here to help!

November 16, 2007 at 3:50 pm in reply to: Should Editing Computer Be Used Only for Editing?

Walter is, of course, right. But put me down as yet another example of someone who does it “wrong” and has never had a problem.

Well, of course I’ve had computer problems, but they’ve always been traced down to something other than application conflicts. The one big thing I follow is to make sure anything I instal is something that can be totally shut off when I want it to be. So, no programs that are always running in the background. And it’s likewise smart to shut down everything else while you’re actually using Final Cut.

By following that advice I’ve always been fine. BUT I do want to point out that I don’t deliver content for broadcast AND I have a 2nd Final Cut system. So I have more flexible deadlines + a functional backup system. If my deadlines were super-strict and I only had one system I’d probably be talking more like Walter.

It’s all about “what if?” What if something goes wrong, what will you do? I have my answer, make sure you have one. As long as you can answer that question, you shouldn’t be too afraid of things like this.

Are there other projects on your computer? Go into the Final Cut scratch disk and erase the render files for those other projects. You’ll have to re-render them later, but for the time being it will free up some space.

Just make sure you’re then exporting to the same hard drive that your scratch disc is on.

It’s an Easy Setup with exactly that name.

Keep looking. There is a ‘Gain’ filter in the audio filters bin.

I tried it on 2 clips last night and it seemed to work fine.

I chose “HDV 1080p24” from the Easy Setup menu. Then, I manually changed the capture setting from “HDV” to “Apple Intermediate Codec.”

I ran a 24pA tape from my V1U and it captured it as a 23.98 AIC file. I stepped through it and found no interlacing or split frames. So, apparently it dropped the extra frames AND converted it to AIC right over firewire. I’m very pleased!

It sounds like you’re interested in the setup called “HDV – Apple ProRes 422 1080p24”

I haven’t had a chance to test that one yet, so I can’t confirm that it works, but the other setup did a perfect job, so hopefully this one works the same.

I think you have to upgrade to 10.4.11 that just came out. Once you do that, the Final Cut update will appear.

Dunno if this helps, but I saw this yesterday:

    https://www.macobserver.com/article/2007/11/13.7.shtml

And zrb, I think I know what he means by “held up Leopard.” Towards the end, some of the updates of Leopard going out to developers had notes that mentioned making the system-wide Software Update deliver HP printer drivers. Now, obviously that wasn’t literally holding-up Leopard, but I’m guessing Mitch read an article somewhere that sort of made it sound that way since it was among the last things they worked on before shipping.

Did you use Final Cut’s ‘Easy Setup’ to change the settings to HDV? This will change all of Final Cut’s settings (including capture settings) to HDV mode.
