Thanks for the response, Marc. Here are my system specs:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit with Service Pack 1
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00 GHz
    RAM: 8GB
GPU: AMD Radeon R5 200 series graphics card
    Motherboard: ASUS Rampage Extreme Motherboard
I/O: I’m just using keyboard and mouse, no control surface

The original camera source files were Pro Res from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, but I’m using the flattened master from the editor, which was rendered in ProRes 422 HQ.

    Thanks!

January 21, 2012 at 12:22 am in reply to: Check out my newest cinematography demo reel!

    Kevin,

All of the reels I’ve released prior to this one have been about 2 minutes. Basically they’re sizzle reels. This one is my long reel. I plan to make another sizzle reel from this reel’s footage that’s around 2 minutes.

I found Suki Medencevic, ASC has a reel online that does have the footage divided up by projects at https://vimeo.com/25528211 He did an interesting thing, though. He put a montage of shots from these projects at the beginning of the reel to give viewers a preview of what they’ll see. I’ll probably do that when I make a new reel in a couple weeks, and put the footage divided by projects after the montage. I probably will pull down the names of the pieces, as most people don’t think it’s necessary.

I would like to know which shots you think should absolutely stay in. I’m too close to all these shots now, so outside input will really help me from cutting the best stuff.

Some folks have told me the Johnny Cash song really works with my reel, and some have told me it doesn’t. I’ve used instrumentals with great beats in the past for my reels, and I wanted to do something different. I think the song does work with my footage.

Thanks for the input. It will help me when I’m doing my re-edit soon. Glad you liked my stuff!

    Steve,

I was told by a friend that produces the in-depth athlete segments for the Dew Tour on NBC that it’s best to use a song that people know for demo reels. Now do most pro cinematographers/directors/actors that use popular songs in their demo reels pay for music rights? I don’t know. I doubt it, though. Many pro demo reels I’ve seen do have popular songs in them.

Thanks for the input about the 50 seconds. Upon further research, I found that most cinematography reels will only contain 30 seconds or less of one project. I’ll be adding to this reel when a commercial I shot is released in the next two weeks, so I’ll pare every featured project down to 30 seconds or less.

August 15, 2008 at 4:56 am in reply to: Help! My Vegas 7 crashes when importing m2t’s!!!

I re-started, degfragged, and recaptured, but I’m still getting the same problem.

Could it be some kind of capture setting? The files look fine when played by themselves.

    Thanks for helping out,

I tried using the import button and importing to the project media window, but Vegas still crashes on me after getting a few in.
I did get an error that said I was low on memory, so I increased my virtual memory to what was recommended by my computer. I have 2 GB of RAM now, maybe that’s not enough.

All the footage I’m trying to import was recorded on a Canon XH-A1 and captured from it as well.

    Thanks,

  • Thanks for the tip, Ed. It was docked and the change of screen res did the trick.

Thanks for the info on the horizontal flip, Douglas. That was easy.
What’s not so easy is this HD problem I’m having. With this converted HD footage, I’m telling you, I can’t render to anything but NTSC DV and NTSC DV widescreen. It doesn’t matter if I’m making MPEG-2’s or AVI’s. It pretends like it’s rendering, but the video preview box stays black instead of showing what it’s rendering like it normally does. A file is made, however, but it’s a .m2t file, whatever the hell that is. It is of significant size, but the .m2t won’t play at all. Any ideas Doug? Any ideas anyone?

    Thanks again for the help,

  • Yeah, that’s what I figured. I went with avg 4800 Kbps with a max of 8000 Kbps and it came out perfect. I also switched from using regular wave files to the Dolby digital ac3’s and that brought the size down quite a bit more. Everything fits well with about 11% to spare. Thanks, Peter, and everyone else who replied.
