What would you recommend as best compression method to fit almost 2hrs on DVD 5?
Posted by Jason Ryan on October 19, 2006 at 11:29 pmI am trying to fit my bmx video, with extras, on a DVD 5. With mpeg 2 files at default compression on DVD architect, I’m only getting about 1 hr. 20 min. on a dvd now. I need to fit almost 2 hrs on there. Would you guys recommend changing bit rate? How about using third party compression software like Compressor? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

October 20, 2006 at 12:48 amAn average bitrate around 4800 – max 80000 should do fine.

October 20, 2006 at 5:03 amThanks for the response, Peter. Now can I assume that I get the bitrate down to 4800 by using the recompress settings? Also, I’m not seeing anywhere I can set the max bitrate to 80000.

October 20, 2006 at 5:50 amAfter selecting Render As / MPEG 2, click the Custom tab and you can chenge settings as you wish. If you create a template you’re likely to re-use, give it a name and save it – it will now appear on the list of presets.

October 20, 2006 at 11:42 amAnother thing you may try is what I did before I knew much about bitrates. I rendered to AVI in Vegas then brought the 2+ hour video into DVDA-2. There’s a check box “fit-to-disk”. I tried that and came out with a nice 2’+ video on DVD. I think it was 2h 5m. DVDA did all the work for me 😉

October 20, 2006 at 5:49 pmIf I’m not mistaken I think Peter means 8000 max…not 80000. I just did a project that was 2hr 25min on a DVD and it came out fine.

October 21, 2006 at 1:07 amYes – thanks Ted. If it were possible to achieve, 80000 would probably melt the disc!

October 24, 2006 at 4:57 pmYeah, that’s what I figured. I went with avg 4800 Kbps with a max of 8000 Kbps and it came out perfect. I also switched from using regular wave files to the Dolby digital ac3’s and that brought the size down quite a bit more. Everything fits well with about 11% to spare. Thanks, Peter, and everyone else who replied.

September 8, 2008 at 10:43 pmI also am trying to fit 2 hours..but when I click on MPEG-2 the custom button is grayed out. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

September 8, 2008 at 11:04 pmLinda, I don’t think the “Custom” option is an option in any of the Movie Studio versions, if that’s what you’re using.
