It’s a nice idea, but I know of no NLE that does this. Avid can link a script to shots but this is only really useful for drama cutting.

There’s an idea for a plug-in!

Thanks Jeremy, kinda what I figured. I have to wait to get the footage before I can ascertain what frame rate, but I think I’ll edit NTSC and see about conversion afterwards.

I’ll post again when I know more.

BTW, this is a good time to chime in with my usual mantra –

GET A SPARE FW HD and SUPERDUPER or CARBON COPY CLONER and CLONE THAT SYSTEM DRIVE!!!!!

Do it. For the sake of a hundred or so bucks it’s a must. Problem like this? a couple of hours if that to fix, or a 2 minute reboot from the good clone if you’re really up against it…

When you did the update, did you a) repair permissions before and after and b) make sure you ran the updater till no more new software came up? Sometimes Apple’s updates require 2 or 3 passes before all the available software has been updated. AFAIK the last update was one of those…

Try this:

Copy your 4:3 sequence (for safety’s sake!)
Change sequence settings in your copy (or other one) to anamorphic
Select all clips (they should now be incorrectly sized)
Right-click and do a remove attributes – select distort
See what happens!

It’s worked for me before now.

I think you’re making a ton of work for yourself by going down the hi-tec route. If I were doing that, I’d look at mixing live to tape, with a secondary output to the edit suite digitizing the live mix feed, and ISOing 3 or more cameras. If it’s a short show and you’re using camcorders instead of studio cams, then look at recording each cam to tape as well as the live feed for backup. Any mixing cock-ups can be corrected quickly in post, providing all cams are sync’d TC.

PAL SD mixers can be gotten relatively cheaply now, and something like an old Grass Valley is pretty bulletproof. Even the Panasonic DV mixers are great for what they do…

If you’re going to do this you need to decide what codec your final sequence will be in. If you want to edit HDV (for disk speed/space issues for example) then I’d upres to HDV. Personally if you can I’d use ProRes.

You can use compressor to upres, I’ve dine it with DV material to HD and was pleasantly surprised with the results. the other thing you may consider, especially as your using 4:3 material that you’ll need to ‘Pan & Scan’ (more accurately tilt & scan I suppose) is Digital Anarchy’s ReSizer. I think it’s about a hundred bucks but I’ve been impressed with the quality and there are examples of SD to HD on their website.

‘Nuvver vote for the Gen10. It does exactly what it says on the tin, and I’ve sync’d Digi, Beta SP, DVCPro, HDCam with it, all to my Multibridge Pro, with sync to spare for monitor etc. Brill.

As you’ve probably gathered by now, H264 and FCP don’t play nicely together.

I guess it all depends on how much is a major amount. I’ve used Compressor and MPEG Streamclip to convert fairly hefty amounts of footage – just set a batch process and leave your machine on overnight, or over the weekend. That’s the only way if you can’t get the original source….

Ahhh. Wise man once say, when you’re in a pit, stop digging. Don’t hire a JCB…

Anyway, back to the issue in hand.

All the solutions offered you are valid. You have an old machine with minimum RAM, you’re using it for editing and also MSN – which would indicate a myriad of other uses too. Personally, based on my 15 or so years’ experience in the industry, I’d never run MSN on any machine I edit on. If your problems started after installing it that is a BIG CLUE. if you choose to ignore that BIG CLUE along with the other BIG CLUES pointed out to you then there isn’t a great deal I can suggest to you…

BTW you don’t say if you’re using an external drive for media storage. You do know that editing off the internal drive is a complete no-no don’t you? If not I strongly suggest getting an external drive to put your media on.

Failing that, I can only say what I’d do in your position. I’d try and take my project and media to someone who has a beefier machine and see if the problem re-occurs. If it does you have a corrupt file somewhere along the line. Can you try opening an earlier project from the autosave vault in order to see if that opens correctly? (Be careful not to overwrite your existing project)

Other that those suggestions already given, I’m afraid I’m out of ideas. Sorry if that’s a waste of space.
