Third world blackmagic multicam on the cheap
I’ve been tasked with putting together a future-proof multi-cam show on a low budget in a third world country that broadcasts Pal analog. And if that’s not enough it has to be edited quickly with little capturing bother. It’s a talk show with five cameras. What I’m thinking of doing is shooting on five prosumer HD cams, each recording directly onto a PC hardrive through something like a Blackmagic Intensity card (uncompressed HD). Meaning five cameras and five “capture PCs” Then after the show has been shot downconvert to from HD to SD through those same intensity cards, simultaneously on those five PCs to save time. (Save the HD files somewhere so sometime in the future they can remaster and output bluray discs). Then after everything is in SD edit the show on Vegas using the multicam function, export the Pal final and done. Good idea? Any quicksand pits I’m wading into or equipment I’m not aware of that would make things much easier? Thanks hugely!

I think you’re making a ton of work for yourself by going down the hi-tec route. If I were doing that, I’d look at mixing live to tape, with a secondary output to the edit suite digitizing the live mix feed, and ISOing 3 or more cameras. If it’s a short show and you’re using camcorders instead of studio cams, then look at recording each cam to tape as well as the live feed for backup. Any mixing cock-ups can be corrected quickly in post, providing all cams are sync’d TC.
PAL SD mixers can be gotten relatively cheaply now, and something like an old Grass Valley is pretty bulletproof. Even the Panasonic DV mixers are great for what they do…
