  • workflow for NTSC to PAL?

    Hi boves,

I may have an edit soon for a programme shot in HDV… that should have been PAL… but it would appear that a *ahem* ‘technical problem’ means that the tapes were recorded NTSC.

    *deep sigh*

What to do? PAL master deliverable, probably HDCAM. Footage already digitised. Convert master clips? Edit all as NTSC then convert?

I’m happy with the HDV up to ‘proper’ HD part, BTW – I’m just looking for a way to minimise the NTSC-PAL headache and get a heads-up on any ‘gotchas’that might arise.

Your inestimable knowledge would, as ever, be greatly appreciated.

    Jason

BTW editing on FCP6.01, QT 7.4.5, BM Multibridge Pro, if that makes any difference.

    What frame rate?

If I were you (and I’m not saying this is the best way) I’d edit @ NTSC and do a high quality motion compensated conversion at mastering using an Alchemist or similar piece of expensive hardware.

Anything else will be lots of headache for a lot of loss in quality.

If you can afford to get all of your source footage properly converted then do that, but I’d bet that’d be cost prohibitive.

You can try and mess around with some plug ins/apps such as:

    Nattress Standards conversion

    Compressor

    JES Deinterlacer

Your mileage will vary with all of these.

Thanks Jeremy, kinda what I figured. I have to wait to get the footage before I can ascertain what frame rate, but I think I’ll edit NTSC and see about conversion afterwards.

I’ll post again when I know more.
