Have read previous posts about Apple Compressor doing fair job with upscaling.

I have a lot of historical b/w SD footage to cut into interviews shot on HDV1080i50 to be projected as quicktime file off hard drive in a museum exhibition at 1400 x 788 (projector size). Historical footage was digitised from Beta SP as uncompressed 10bit.

    1) Using Compressor, should this footage be upconverted to HVD1080i50, ProRes or HD uncompressed?

    2) What do I do if I want to maintain 4:3 frame and adjust later scene by scene?

    3) At what stage should it be rendered progressive for digital playing?

    Thanks – Mickey

    Hi,

i would try de-interlacing SD in FCP first and exporting to HDV 1080p25 with letterboxing on sides – that way there should be no problems with field order and it should work with i50 footage just fine on a p25 timeline (there should be no problem with applying de-interlace filter to i50 later).

As for the aspect ratio, i’d rather consider cropping it to 16:9 in Compressor just to avoid blowing it up again in FCP later and have another quality loss.

    Good luck!

    Mickey,

If you’re going to do this you need to decide what codec your final sequence will be in. If you want to edit HDV (for disk speed/space issues for example) then I’d upres to HDV. Personally if you can I’d use ProRes.

You can use compressor to upres, I’ve dine it with DV material to HD and was pleasantly surprised with the results. the other thing you may consider, especially as your using 4:3 material that you’ll need to ‘Pan & Scan’ (more accurately tilt & scan I suppose) is Digital Anarchy’s ReSizer. I think it’s about a hundred bucks but I’ve been impressed with the quality and there are examples of SD to HD on their website.

    Hi Jason, hi Mickey.

I would suggest to consider Dee Mon Video Enhancer as a good alternative to Digital Anarchy’s ReSizer. You can see comparison of several uprezzing methods, including DA, here:
