    Hi,

We have had good results with the Extreme card over the past year, mastering over 52 half hours for broadcast, each in various versions. Generally it has been a stable and functional system, quite “seamless”. Previous to this we used a Media 100 system for online and at that time I regarded FCP as a kind of toy but I have revised that opinion.

We recently had a couple of hiccups upgrading to FCP 5 but it was all in the details of the install and didn’t take long to work out.

The color correction is much better than we had with our Media 100 and mastering to Beta SP and Digibeta has been smooth. Recapturing and mastering is frame accurate.

All in all it’s been a solid professional tool with few problems. I should add that we use a Videotek hardware SDI legalizer to conform images to NTSC legal specs and while expensive it has been worth it as we now pay no attention to legalization problems; illigal pixels are corrected automatically in real time and we use the CC time to make things look good.

It seems fine now that we got some bugs worked out. It seems important to uninstall the old Blackmagic drivers (with the uninstall program from those drivers) before you up date your Blackmagic..

    G5 dual 2, 1.5 gigs mem.. 10.4.2 fcp 5.0.2 etc…

So, everything cleared up when I did an uninstall of the 5.0 b drivers and then a “clean” install of the 5.0 drivers.. Had a cable go bad just after the installation.. so that was confusing for a while. Bad timing.

ah.. you are playing back 96 k files from a 48k sequence… I get it. I don’t find the “on the fly” conversion to be too solid except for a quick preview… perhaps that is your problem. Got a feeling that doing the conversion will help.

    good luck.

Just a wild guess but it sounds like a sample rate mismatch somewhere or perhaps a bit depth mismatch? is your 01 x expecting 24 bits?

    just a guess..

My problem is a bit different, that I get nothing out of the sdi output.. the analog output seems to be working…

    Thanks Kristian,

We are now experiencing a loss of SDI output with the 5.0 b2 drivers… I’ll try the uninstall and the reinstall of the v 5 drivers…

Oh why did I ever upgrade?? oh yeah.. to install FCP 5…

It’s been ok so far but i can’t say that there is any overwhelming reason to do it unless you need the Multicam features desperately or need to capture more than 2 channels of audio (am I forgetting anything?). The basic functionality is mostly the same.

Otherwise we get the impression that it is a tiny bit more sluggish and we have had a few crashes though not that many. That’s progress…

Widgets are a very cool Tiger feature.. they give editors yet another fun thing to play with instead of working! 😉

We needed the multichannel capture or I would not have done it; for basic editing there is no appreciable benifit for us and you may want to wait a bit.

We do export OMF but we mix with Digital Performer not Pro Tools. In general it works very well. Not sure what the situation is with Pro Tools but with DP we get the fades but not the rubber-banding, which which works ok for us. Nice having the handles.
