    Sometime the signal coming off a vhs tape is fine to screen but just not stable enough to capture.

    You can try to first transfer it to Betacam SP (if you have access to one) and then play back through the beta deck’s TBC. That will stabilize it as much as possible and it may capture better.

    I was told that the quality is not that good.

    That’s the thing. I was told that transfering via sdi to a DVCProHD codec makes no sense as the picture has to be decoded stretched, and reincoded thus reducing the quality.

    Thanks for that info. Yeah I’ve had the 16 track capture experience…

    They don’t seem to offer the J3 any more as a new purchase, just the j30 but I do see some used ones floating around.

    Thanks for the suggestion Jeremy. Since the clips at iStock are available in PAL or NTSC it’s hard to tell what format they are originated in and I need to make sure I am working from PAL original. Does that make sense?
