[Craig Alan] “But they only recommend drives they have tested and they do not test them all. Not sure it matters and they no longer test in pegasus thunderbolt 1 raids which we have.”

I’ve been running a Pegasus TB1 for maybe four years now, in RAID 5. I had my first drive death two weeks ago. I ordered a couple of HGST Ultrastar replacements––enterprise class. The 4TB models have a 2 million hour MTBF rating; https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822146071&cm_re=hgst_ultrastar-_-22-146-071-_-Product
There were no issues with plugging it in and rebuilding the RAID 5.

    Hi, Kira:

Do you need SDI input or will HDMI do the trick? I’ve used the Atomos Ninja Assassin with my GH4 and it’s a very sweet combination.

  • [Walter Soyka] “https://www.oneframeofwhite.com/2014/

Those are the 2014 winners of the “One Frame of White” contest, an annual competition where artists show off what they can do on a stock Flame or Smoke, with no third-party plugins and no external sources. The only footage allowed on the framestore is a single frame of white, hence the name. “

Thanks for sharing that, Walter. Very cool stuff!

    Hi, Lisa:

It’s called moiré and it can happen with CMOS cameras; some more so than others. What camera are you using? Dialing down the sharpness and contrast in the camera settings can help.

    Ker:

I take it you are not going for an all-white infinity background with just one background light. How does your camera handle gradients?

I’m a fan of the TorchLED Bolt. I’ve used it many times as a back/rim light.

If you’ve basically got a permanent interview setup then I would definitely not use a lav mic, but instead boom a good hyper-cardioid mic overhead.

[John Rofrano] “It’s about whether you can agree to pay a monthly subscription fee or risk that your tools will stop working completely.”

That’s not a risk; it’s a fact. If you stop paying, you don’t have access to the software. You pay again and you get it back. It’s your call if you don’t think it’s worth the money, but I don’t think it’s any riskier than using any other software.

October 30, 2015 at 10:54 pm in reply to: GH4 vs GH4R vs Atomos Ninja Assassin

[Will Chamberlin] “Does the V-Log L capabilities of the GH4 now negate the need for an external recorder like the Ninja Assassin?”

No. If you want/need an external recorder, V-log doesn’t change that.

[Will Chamberlin] “I don’t need over 30 minutes of recording so would the GH4 with the firmware update be a solid option for 4K video without having to splash extra for the GH4R and even MORE with the Atomos?”

My understanding is that the GH4R is just a GH4 with the V-log firmware pre-installed. You don’t have to get everything all at once. Get the GH4 and do some shooting. If you want the V-log then add that. If you decide later that you want external recording, then buy the Ninja Assassin.
