    The way Premiere has it setup is you can use a card that’s unsupported, and Todd’s made it clear that it’s exactly that, “unsupported”, but it will probably work fine. AE 12.1 will supposedly have that feature built into it along with a longer list of supported cards.

    This looks like a combination of techniques. I think I’d start with time remapping it to speed it up and trying some posterize time treatment. the time remapping will let you make a hold where you need it like you see in the video. another thing that seems to be going on is a bit of ghosting, which you could get with the echo effect I think.

    I love Newton and own it as well, but you could save a lot of money just doing this by hand unless you plan to use Newton a lot more, which is highly probable.

    Handmade technique would basically involve a bunch of randomly sized circles with an adjustment layer on the whole stack using a gaussian blur and matte choker to get the liquid sticky effect as the come in “contact” with each other. You could create a bunch of circle layers with a cool script called Array https://aescripts.com/array/ As far as random scalling them, there are a few ways you could do that. Array might have a way of doing it, but a random expression on the scale parameter would probably do just as well. I’m not sure exactly what the expression would be, but I’m sure someone’s written one up here on the cow. Once you get all your circles created, basically animate them on, then animate them off. You can offset the layers to get a bit of randomness with the motion using this script – https://aescripts.com/layer-random-shifter/ Make sure you do your animation before offsetting the layers. You could also employ Ease & Whiz bounce to get some bounce in the water https://aescripts.com/ease-and-wizz/

    Hope that helps with some additional methods. Don’t get me wrong, tho, Newton is freaking awesome.

    I don’t see what the problem is with sending your comps to AME? You’re also freed up to continue working in AE if need be. CMD/CNTRL + OPT/ALT + M is the shortcut to send it to AME. Todd’s right about AME handling compression much better than AE ever has. I’ve seen some foul renders come out of AE sometimes when I render to a compressed format. I suppose it’s a different workflow somewhat, but not really once you learn how useful AME can be.

  • You can create a World position null under the utilities menu in the World transform menu. I would link whatever you want to follow your globe to that null and you should be fine. Just make sure that whatever you link to your world transform null is in the same space as your Element stuff. So if you’re group is 1000 pixels away in z space, but your world transform is at 0, anything linked to the world transform null won’t line up. Does that make sense?

  • I think the way I’d go about it would be the scanned text approach. I’d take each image that I need to transition to and arrange my scanned text in After Effects over the image in the shapes of the darkest parts of the image since that appears to be where the text fades to. Separate the various scanned type layers in z space while you arrange the text layers. Then it looks like you just fade the opacity up randomly until all your scanned text is fully opaque. About the point where the text starts to get really dark and fill the screen you’d fade in your first image. Then to transition to the next image it looks like you need to adjust the position of various scanned text layers to match the dark areas of the next image.

    It’s a pretty basic approach, nothing too complex. Focus on scanned text layers distribured in z space to match the dark areas of each image you’re transitioning to. You’ll naturally have motion with the text layers after the first image, so you’d need to give the first batch of text a movement to keep that look consistent.

    Oh, and I learned yesterday that when you scan your stuff in Acrobat using the grayscale setting, it will create a PDF with just the darks on the page and make a transparent image automatically for you. That might save a lot of time scanning in the text.

    if you mind sharing your project, I wouldn’t mind taking a look at what you’ve got and setting something up. I think the ConnectLayers script will get you most of the way there, but I’m not entirely sure what your’e situation is since you say you’re still looking for something to drive the end points of a line with nulls and that’s exactly what ConnectLayers is designed to do.

    Seems that Motion Boutique’s free script ConnectLayers would do the trick here. There’s an option for bezier lines with the “Rope” button. The way it works, tho, is with an animated null or shape or any layer really and it attaches to the anchor point of that animated layer. Obviously you need more than 2 layers to create a bezier curve with rope, so more than 2 points to create the curve. Anyway, after you’ve run the script, it creates the line via shape layer, and it’s not really controllable other than animating the stroke or applying other shape layer effects to it. So you need all your keyframes BEFORE running the script.
