Thanks for sharing that thread. You know it’s weird. My machine only does this intermittently now. According to Todd, you want to have everything on fast disks, and preferably keeping your media on a separate drive. That’s actually all in the performance guidelines in the help doc. I have all that set up and don’t seem to have any problems, but once in awhile I experience delays (project size not related). I think it might be a driver thing, but who knows. My overall experience is just fine.

Thanks Dan! This will be very useful with the option to use dollar sign or %.

Just curious, but do any of you experiencing this sluggish behavior have Java installed on your machines? I seem to be experiencing something like this today and the ONLY difference between my machine Saturday and today is maybe something to do with Java since I installed that recently (which come to think of it may have been Friday, but AE’s been fine until this morning).

I have OS and apps only on a fast SSD (sata3 connection) and AE cache hooked up to another fast SSD with sata3. 3.2ghz 6 core CPU with 32gb of RAM and a GTX 680 GPU.

Painting in the comp window? You mean like in Apple’s motion? haha, I only say that to poke at the simplicity with which Motion does certain things. I haven’t used it since 2010, but I’m sure it hasn’t gotten worse.

Thanks for the painting tip. I like it, but I don’t like being forced into a layer window like you say.

Another Motion poke – particle emitter AE!? Come on. That should be as intuitive as, if not maybe even more than, Particular and more robust than anything Apple, or Hit Film, or anyone can offer.

    Sorry about that, end poking.

Don’t get me wrong, I find having the option to onion skin in AE invaluable probably a few times a month on various projects, sometimes even more, especially with some of the style I do.

Not sure if an onion skinning type feature in AE would address this, but I’ve looked around in forums and such to figure it out, and hopefully it does, but when you’re painting on a layer, you have to have the comp window opened alongside the layer window and use it as a reference when you paint. An example would be like an animated brush stroke on top of a bunch of other layers in your comp and you’d like to SEE those layers for reference as you paint. That right there would be really handy.

    Maybe that’s an adobe.com/go/wish moment 😉

I’ve never actually done any frame by frame animation, but of all the stuff I’ve seen, it would seem easier to me to do it in Photoshop considering all the painting tools you have vs the crude brush palette in AE.

I had a model created in r11 (not 11.5) that opened just fine in 14. Maybe your file is corrupted.

I’m with Cassius. I’m confused why you’d want to switch your PSD files out for PNGs. I don’t think you’re trying to save hard drive space are you? Are you talking abou the layer comp layers in the imported folder in AE that contains all the PSD layers? You exported those from PS using the script and now you’d like to replace the layered file with PNGs, correct? This seems like a redundant waste of time.

Some of the best frame by frame animators I know use PS for their workflows and have no complaints. Here are a couple of tutorials on the subject –

I mean, in the meanwhile, that’s probably the best way to get your looks. This is the guy who suggested those 2 videos –
