I thought AE was updated for retina displays. Mine is an old 2010 model and the type looks fine, but it’s substituting a default font in place of your font since I can’t install it.

I tried installing the fonts on my mac, but they won’t install for some reason. I did do some googling to figure that out, but I’m not getting anywhere. I think you might just try converting the font to masks or shape layers. Maybe that’ll help. The comp seems to display fine in my viewer. Maybe you’re zoomed in to 200% and that’s why you’re seeing pixelation? I don’t know at this point since I can’t open the comp with the font as you see it on your computer.

I also don’t have CS4. I only go as far back as CS5.

Can you share the file? It’s hard to tell what’s wrong without more information or just looking at the file itself.

Is your type in a pre comp? If so, turn the collapse transformation switch on.

If all you’re going for is creating lots of layers. Why not use Array https://aescripts.com/array/ or just simply create one layer, duplicate it, then duplicate both of those, and so and and so on until you have the ammount you need. I like Array personally if I want to make…well, an array of layers.

As for Newton processing thousands of layers, you have to create the simulation in passes (no more than your computer can handle, but usually somewhere between 500-999) and then put each pass together in one master comp.

I’m not entirely sure what you want to do. Do you have a reference you’re trying to match?

You’ll need a 3d particle generator, like Particular from Red Giant, to do that. It will generate the volume you’re after.

I’m also interested in the response from someone who knows more than me on this matter. My system has been behaving laggy as well. It’s mostly selecting stuff, or for example say I select 50 layers and then click the 3D switch. Sometimes it’s instant, and sometimes it’s one…at…a…time, then flies through the rest. Just weird things that create lag all over the place. It seems that it didn’t used to do that with the initial release. My system is optimized per Adobe’s recommendations with OS and Apps on a sata 3 SSD, media on an separate HDD (7200) and cache on it’s own sata 3 SSD as well. I’ve got 32gb of RAM AE and seems to enjoy about 24gb of it at times. Maybe caching a lot?

I wonder if there’s a common element between users who work with a lot of shape layers or use a certain plugin. In my most recent project, I’ve experienced lag in the interface, and it’s mostly shape layers, ease & whiz expressions, and a few stock plugins (hue, and fast blur).

I’d go with Roland’s route. It’s the most common way to do this and probably fastest/cheapest. You could alternatively try Mask Avenger on aescripts, but unless you can see more use out of it, probably not worth buying for this. That plugin has a control that allows you to animate along a mask path from 0%-100% and animate the path at the same time keeping the objects position with the path.

  • I think there’s a script on aescripts.com that will separate the masks to individual layers as well. I usually just use Newton for that function if I need to.
