  • Ah well, for that you’ll need the Plexus plugin. That is, in fact, how they accomplished the 3d move and perspective aware lines (lines closer to camera are thicker than lines further away) in the example video you shared. But even with Plexus, you can’t use custom lines like from an AI file. What’s so unique about the line your client wants that can’t be created in After Effects? If it’s just the 3d perspective they want, then I’d go with Plexus or fake it with ConnectLayers in a RayTraced comp to extrude the lines – you actually just bevel the line with a concave bevel and don’t extrude it all I thin, but that way when it rotates it’s not completely flat.

  • I’ve used this script extensively. It generates the lines into shape layers which are filled with expressions to track the anchor points of the layers you’re connecting. When you convert Illustrator artwork to shape layers it does a pretty good job, but for gradients and stroke effects, it’s a no go. Why do you want to use your line from Illustrator? You can create dashed lines with shape layers up to 5 unique dashes I think. I usually just add the dashs after ConnectLayers creates my paths.

Thanks Walter. I think that may satisfy his curiosity.

According to my friend Chad, he feels that it would help him cut to audio more accurately. I’ve never had this problem personally, but there ya go.

“Nudging an in point half a frame means it won’t show up until the next full frame thereafter.”

That’s exactly what I’m interested in. I think another feature of my hypothetical script would include the ability to set the OUT point, or extend it by half a frame to match the IN point of the next layer.

    Any takers? 🙂

A friend of mine, you may have heard of him from Lynda.com, Chad Perkins, was complaining how you can’t get precise enough edits for cutting to music in AE. I don’t see how Premiere is any better either. So the whole purpose was to cut to music with better precision. You’re saying changing the frame rate helps? I suppose I’d have to do some experimenting. I wonder if there’s some simple way to write a script that allows you to nudge the in point to the next half frame. Problem is, I have no knowledge of scripting.

Thanks Dan, that does help make sense of it.

Thanks Dan! So if I understand this correctly, “numberKeyframes” defines which keyframe is the looping point, or simply how many are looped? Because with a value of 1, I’m a little confused that it’s looping only 1 keyframe, since it’s looping after the 1st keyframe, but not including it. Is there a number 0 keyframe in consideration with AE?

You should look into the Animation Patterns script. I think that one can combine multiple “patterns” or animations all referenced with expressions on the same parameter. Free version https://aescripts.com/animationpatterns/

    Pro version https://aescripts.com/animationpatternspro/

Hey Declan, I love this expression, but is there a way to have it start at the layer in point and stop at the layer out point? I’m having a tough time with a particular comp that has a lot of expressions and splitting layers just screws things up.
