The keyboard mapping function of Final Cut is the most robust of any software I’ve ever used…Premier comes close..but mapping with modified keys is really impressive.

So to clarify…what is the difference between dragging and option-dragging from the favorite effects folder? Seems to do the same thing for me.

OK…well, it’s probably in my *newness* to FCP. When I read “favorites folder” I equated it to same as the effects *pallete* in AVID.

I’m natively a PC guy…and the key on my keyboard says “alt” and “option”.
I understand that you can copy a transition directly in the timeline using the option key.
But in your discussion, the reference was to option dragging from the effects palette (folders). That was my question. Dragging or option dragging doesn’t seem to do anything different for me.

I’d really like to know how…I can’t figure it out at all. The ganging feature is a bit cryptic vs AVID…

OK…I’m going to ask maybe a stupid question, but why Alt-drag the effect? From the favorites…I don’t see any difference between dragging and alt dragging.

The only mention of this in the manual is in the section about avoiding nested seq’s for EDL exporting. Sometimes I wonder how Final Cut can be so powerful in so many ways…but miss some really basic things like this. Motion on nested sequences…kind of a big deal I would think! Maybe it should be in the manual under…I don’t know…nested sequences?

I used animation because I knew it was uncompressed and it gave me some insight into how the Final Cut timeline works.
Do you know much between 422 and 422HQ? I’m assuming that for compressed you don’t get much usage out of the extra quality that HQ offers. Is HQ reserved for times when you’re working with uncompressed footage starting out with? When would you use HQ?

I know it’s been awhile but I’ll respond because I found your question while searching for the problem I had.
I found the solution to my specific problem. It occured when I had an image sized at half HD res – 960 x ??? and I changed the size to a full res HD image and purged the project to basically reload the image at full size. Project crashed and I had the exact problems you explained.
The solution was to remove that source file from the folder where AE was looking for it. When I opened the project, it said I had one missing file and ran fine.
So if you couldn’t find which file was giving you issues…you could start by cutting out folders in your project that contain TIFFs and keep reloading until you find it.
