[Eoin McManus] “It seems insane that SONY creates these Mp4’s which cant be interpreted in ANY other way.. bizzare”

Are you kidding? They’ve made a VERY successful business model from this strategy. 🙂

You may want to paste in the Sony EX Series XDCAM creative cow forum.

I believe Ian Cook from Sony monitors that forum and he is outstanding when it comes to solutions. I believe that at one point he told me that the EX media is MPEG2 media wrapped in an MPEG4 wrapper. It’s very bizarre and doesn’t surprise me that you are having issues reading/decoding/encoding this media.

It’s meant to go through XDCAM transfer and be re-wrapped into QT MOV container…being decoded by the XDCAM EX codec.

Posting in that forum will probably result in better and more relevant responses.

    Can u even openthese files in QuickTime? I don’t think u can without a plug-in…and I don’t think it’s cheap! 🙂

If u can’t open in QuickTime (or other media player), then you cant decode them…so no transcoding software will be able to read them…

Here’s my understanding of how it works…you have to select a range INSIDE 2 outside keyframes, this is important so it only deals with the keyframes in your range.

If you use “relative” it will keep all existing keyframes, but reduce or increase them by a – relative – amount.

If you use “absolute” it will put the first and last keyframe in your range selection at that level and delete the rest.

I believe in the user manual, this is what they mean by “move”…although I’d call that adjust. Move to me means temporally …

It’s not pretty, but gets the job done…I really wish FCP would use in/out as more of a reference than selecting clips…too much mouse clicking.

You could also “open as image sequence” in QuickTime 7…and transcode to ur favorite codec from there.

Look at file size…bup, ifo are navigation files and are kilobytes. The VOB will be sized appropriately and are the only files u need to deal with.

VOB are muxed video files…you’ll need a program like mpeg streamclip to demux and transcode to an editable format.

I did. I posted a screen capture…let me look for it.

Process is range selector, then adjust audio level…its a hack job compared to avid, but possible.
