Importing SONY EX3 Footage…
Posted by Eoin Mcmanus on December 11, 2010 at 8:58 pmHey all,
I have footage recorded with a SONY EX3 in 16:9, 1080p. This was shot a few months ago, before i learned about the log and transfer method where you create a dmg of the media card. So, the footage is all in MP4’s which FCP cannot read.
I was wondering if there is any way to still use long and transfer on these files, and if not, what are the best settings i can use in adobe media encoder to change the footage into a usable file without losing much quality (space is not much of an issue).
Please let me know if you have any ideas, and don’t be afriad (as im sure you wont) to shoot me down because Im new to FCP!

December 11, 2010 at 9:30 pmCan u even openthese files in QuickTime? I don’t think u can without a plug-in…and I don’t think it’s cheap! 🙂
If u can’t open in QuickTime (or other media player), then you cant decode them…so no transcoding software will be able to read them…

December 11, 2010 at 9:37 pmHey, no i cant open them in quicktime. Ive been viewing them with VLC player and Adobe Media Encoder has been able to encode them but I’m just not sure what format i should export them into. I want to lose the minimum ammount of quality. Should i use H.264? Help!

December 11, 2010 at 11:47 pmHey everyone thanks for the responses. I tried using XDcam transfer but it won’t recognize the files. I tried using compressor but it told me “error trying to read source media” also i encoded a few different h.264 versions with adobe media encoder, but FCP could not read them? Im thinking i may have to try mp4 on encoder..
thanks again any more ideas welcome

December 12, 2010 at 2:36 amYou may want to paste in the Sony EX Series XDCAM creative cow forum.
I believe Ian Cook from Sony monitors that forum and he is outstanding when it comes to solutions. I believe that at one point he told me that the EX media is MPEG2 media wrapped in an MPEG4 wrapper. It’s very bizarre and doesn’t surprise me that you are having issues reading/decoding/encoding this media.
It’s meant to go through XDCAM transfer and be re-wrapped into QT MOV container…being decoded by the XDCAM EX codec.
Posting in that forum will probably result in better and more relevant responses.

December 12, 2010 at 3:58 amdo you have the entire folder structure from the card or just the MP4 files?
if you have the BPAV folder structure then use xdcam transfer and “add source” then navigate
to the folder. this will make the clips show up in xdcam transfer then you can convert themif you have just MP4 files than you will need this to use or convert the files…

December 12, 2010 at 4:23 amSO close!
I don’t have the BPAV structure, that is my porblem. This program looks like the PERFECT solution and I thank you for posting it.
Unfortunately, I am on a school computer and need an administrator to authorize any installations! UGH!
It seems insane that SONY creates these Mp4’s which cant be interpreted in ANY other way.. bizzare
Anyways thanks for the help
ps- if there is any way to run this program without fully installing it (doubtful) that would be amazing

Are you kidding? They’ve made a VERY successful business model from this strategy. 🙂

December 12, 2010 at 6:26 pmThis is all to do with not getting the correct file structure off the SXS cards when transferring to a drive. Had the same problem with some stuff a while back, and the only solution so far has been the Calibrated plug-in mentioned a few posts back. ISTR trying lots of solutions, but this was the only one that worked.

December 12, 2010 at 11:19 pmThis also enables you to use the mp4s and is a free trial at the moment
But if you can’t install anything then you’re stuck
